Masha needed to understand his enemy before he could defeat them. He padded through the undergrowth toward the forest edge where the gun oil smell had been strongest yesterday. There, pressed into the soft mud, were boot prints. He studied them carefully, noting the tread pattern and size. The hunters wore heavy boots and walked in pairs. He followed the tracks back toward the road, staying hidden in the shadows. At the tree line, he spotted tire marks and crushed grass where a truck had parked. Now he knew how they arrived and where they entered his territory. This knowledge would help him plan his defense. The next day, Masha climbed the old oak again. He hauled up wooden planks with his teeth and claws. By sunset, he had built a tall observation tower among the branches. From the platform, he could see the entire valley and the road where the trucks came. He sat up there for hours, watching. Three trucks passed in the afternoon. One stopped at the edge of his forest. Two hunters got out and pointed at the trees before driving away. Masha needed warning when hunters crossed into his territory. He collected hollow logs and strips of metal from an old fence. At his wooden marker, he strung the metal between trees with vines. When anything pushed through, the metal pieces would clang against the logs. The sound would carry through the forest to wherever he was. He tested it with his paw. The alarm rang out sharp and clear. The trails were his last concern. Hunters followed the worn paths that cut through his forest. Masha gathered thick branches and piled them across the main trail past his marker. He created new winding paths that led in circles or dead-ended at steep ravines. Near these false trails, he dug shallow pits and covered them with leaves. Anyone following the wrong path would stumble and make noise. His forest was becoming a maze that only he could navigate. The hunters would find no easy passage here.
