Chapter 10

Morning came, and the hollow log held seventeen notes. Emmara unfolded each one and read names she'd expected and accusations she hadn't. Three notes pointed to the same person—a witness who had attended every ceremony where her secrets later surfaced. Her hands trembled as she lifted the final scrap of paper. It named the spy clearly, with details only someone present could know. She carried the note to her workbench and set it beside the vial she'd made for herself. The promise inside still glowed warm and uncracked. She had done what she swore to do. The truth stood before her now, written in ink and confirmed by broken glass. The spy's name was hers at last. She needed a place where everyone could see what she had found. Emmara dragged a wooden platform into position near the watchtower and climbed its steps to test its height. From here, the whole town could gather and watch. She carried her evidence up piece by piece—the documents, the maps, the broken shards that had taught her which promises mattered most. The spy would stand here too, where hiding was impossible. The platform held steady beneath her feet as she arranged everything in clear view. By afternoon, the confrontation had ended. The spy had admitted everything when faced with the seventeen notes and the timeline Emmara had built from broken vials. Words had been spoken that couldn't be taken back. The town had witnessed it all. Emmara returned to the platform alone and knelt beside a birch tree that grew nearby. Its white bark caught the late sun, and small green leaves moved in the breeze. She pressed her palm against the trunk and felt something shift inside her chest—not relief exactly, but space where anger used to live. She built one final thing before the day ended. Near her watchtower, she set a wooden monument shaped like an open book. The pages stood carved and permanent, holding the date and the truth she had uncovered. This wasn't celebration. It was record. The spy's betrayal would be remembered here, just like broken promises deserved to be. Emmara stepped back and looked at what she had made. The mystery was solved. The dream she had carried for so long was finished. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the vial with her own promise inside. It had never cracked. She held it up to the fading light and watched it glow one last time before tucking it away. Some vows kept their shape. Some fireflies still remembered how.
