Chapter 1

Tommy Oliver knelt in the dirt, his black belt worn and faded from years of training. He placed his palms flat on the ground and took a deep breath. One day, he would build his own wilderness survival camp. A place where kids could learn discipline and self-reliance, just like martial arts had taught him. The dream burned in his chest like a fire that wouldn't go out. He stood and brushed the dirt from his gi. The land stretched out before him, twenty acres of pine trees and rocky trails. Tommy had saved for three years to buy this property. Now he needed to make it real. He grabbed his tools from the truck bed and walked to the clearing at the trailhead. For two weeks, he cut logs and fit them together with his own hands. The structure rose slowly, one beam at a time. When he hammered the last board into place, Tommy stepped back. The rustic lodge stood solid and strong, marking the entrance to his camp. Sunlight hit the wood and made it glow warm and golden. Kids would walk through those doors and learn what he had learned. They would find their strength here. Tommy smiled. His dream had begun. The next morning, Tommy carried an old stump to a flat area behind the lodge. He dropped it with a heavy thud and wiped sweat from his forehead. The camp needed a wood station where students could practice real survival skills. He went back to his truck and returned with an axe. The blade caught the light with a strange, cold gleam. Tommy set a log on the stump and swung. The axe split the wood clean through. He stacked the pieces and grabbed another log. Swing after swing, the pile of firewood grew. His arms ached, but he kept going. This was what he would teach them. How to work hard. How to build something with their own hands. The axe stuck into the stump with a solid thunk. Tommy looked at the lodge, the wood pile, the trees all around. His camp was taking shape, one piece at a time. Three days later, Tommy stood in front of his final project. The dojo rose from the earth like it had always belonged there. Wooden posts supported a peaked roof, and bamboo mats covered the floor. The walls stayed open to the forest, letting wind and sunlight pass through. Tommy walked inside and dropped into a fighting stance. His feet knew the movements without thinking. Block, strike, pivot. He moved through the forms he had practiced since childhood. This was where everything would come together. The martial arts and the wilderness training would blend into something new. Students would learn to chop wood and build fires. They would practice kicks and respect. They would find their own strength in these mountains. Tommy bowed to the empty dojo. His wilderness survival camp was ready. Now he just needed students to fill it.
