Mirelle stood in the empty plot of land, dirt crunching under her sandals. The signed documents sat tucked in her belt. She needed to start somewhere, and an academy required students before it required walls. First, she had to spread word through the city. She walked to the edge of the property and looked toward the distant market quarter. Tomorrow, she would visit every corner of Nine and tell people about her vision. She spent the morning posting notices in the market square and outside the guild halls. By afternoon, she headed beyond the city walls. A towering structure rose in the distance, its surface covered in intricate carvings. The master mage who lived there had trained students for forty years. Mirelle climbed the stone steps and knocked. The door opened. Inside, shelves lined the walls, filled with scrolls and glass bottles. The old mage listened as Mirelle explained her academy. He asked how she planned to teach students who learned at different speeds. Mirelle paused. She hadn't thought about that yet. The mage led her to a window overlooking a vast realm where creatures moved through the landscape. Dragons circled overhead while phoenixes perched on rocky outcrops. He explained that different students needed different challenges, just as these creatures each had their own nature. Some would need gentle guidance. Others would thrive under pressure. Mirelle watched a young dragon test its wings against the wind. She understood now—her academy would need space for all kinds of practice, both inside and outside its walls. Before she left, the mage walked her to a river that flowed down from the mountains. Clear water rushed over smooth stones. He filled a clay cup and handed it to her. Students would need simple things too, he said—clean water, rest, and time to think. Mirelle drank and felt the cold liquid clear her mind. She thanked him and headed back toward the city. Her academy would be more than competition and glory. It would be a place where students could grow at their own pace, supported by everything they needed to succeed.
