Chapter 1

Memzo drifted through the crystal waters of Nereidum, their translucent bell pulsing with soft light. Inside their dome, swirling colors shifted—yellow for curiosity, deep blue for determination. They wanted to master something no one else had: turning feelings into symbols that any mind could understand. The town square bustled with activity below. Merchants traded goods. Children played games between the coral structures. If Memzo could create symbols here, where life moved fast and feelings ran strong, then the symbols would work anywhere. They needed a tool that could gather emotions from many beings at once, not just one or two. Memzo spent three days building in their cave. They pressed fragments of star coral together. Bioluminescent algae filled the gaps between pieces. The orb took shape slowly, then all at once. When finished, it floated without effort, wrapped in mist that swirled like distant galaxies. The Galactic Mist Orb could pull emotions from everyone nearby and show them inside its cosmic fog. Memzo carried it carefully to the square and released it into the water. It hung there, waiting. Within moments, colors bloomed inside the mist. Orange flickers of excitement. Deep purple clouds of sadness. But the beings passing by just stared. They saw the display but couldn't read it. Memzo's bell faded to pale gray. Capturing emotions was easy. Making them understandable to all minds—that was the real challenge. Memzo needed to watch feelings happen in real time. The orb showed emotions, but Memzo didn't know which feelings matched which beings. A stage appeared in the square the next morning, built from polished citrine and clear quartz. It sat on a red-orange boulder. Performers would come. They would show their feelings openly through movement and sound. Memzo could float nearby, reading the emotions directly from the performers while watching their actions. Then the symbols would have meaning. A connection between what beings did and what they felt. Memzo's bell glowed bright green with hope. This stage would be the testing ground. Here, Memzo would learn to translate the language of feelings into something everyone could share. For weeks, Memzo watched performers on the stage. Dancers moved with joy—their emotions pulsed in bright yellow waves. Singers expressed sorrow—deep blue ripples spread through the water. Memzo absorbed each feeling, each movement, trying to find patterns. But practice alone wasn't enough. They needed a place dedicated to this work. A place to study, to focus, to train without the noise of the square. Memzo found a red-orange stone tower at the edge of town. Dark purple moss draped its walls. Golden runes glowed along its surface, left by ancient minds. Inside, the water felt still and clear. Perfect for concentration. Memzo brought the orb inside and set up training stations on each floor. This tower would be their center for mastering the art. Here, surrounded by the work of those who came before, Memzo would finally learn to speak in symbols that crossed all barriers.
