Chapter 2

Richard stood in the empty barracks, dust swirling in the morning light. The walls were up, the roof was solid, but the space felt hollow. He needed the basics before anything else could happen. His boots echoed on the bare concrete floor as he walked the perimeter. A Ranger headquarters needed furniture first. He dragged in a heavy wooden desk and centered it near the back wall. Maps would go here, supply lists, mission reports. He tested its weight with both paws—sturdy enough to last. Next came metal filing cabinets, their drawers scraping as he pushed them into place along the side wall. Records mattered. Every recruit, every patrol, every threat needed documentation. Richard stepped back and surveyed his work. The desk anchored the room. The cabinets gave it order. This wasn't just shelter anymore—it was becoming operational. He pulled off his cap and ran a paw through his orange fur. Small steps. Foundation first. The Rangers would have their home, one piece at a time. Outside, he turned his attention to practical needs. Rangers needed weapons within reach and a place to train with them. He supervised the construction of a camouflaged armory, its green and grey panels blending with the fort's colors. Inside, racks lined the walls for rifles, pistols, and ammunition. Adjacent to it, he built a storage shed painted in dark green and brown patterns. Yellow letters spelled "Rangers Military Supplies" across the front. This would house cleaning kits, repair tools, spare parts—everything needed to keep gear battle-ready. As evening approached, Richard installed tall pole lights around the training grounds. They hummed to life, flooding the obstacle course with bright white light. Now his Rangers could train after dark, push themselves when most people were sleeping. He stood beneath one of the lights and looked across the fort. The foundation was set. The work was real now.
