Chapter 1

Fred wanted the fire chief's badge more than anything. To earn it, he had to prove himself the bravest firefighter Storyland had ever seen. But this morning, his yellow helmet sat crooked, and his fire truck couldn't save a single cat. The alarm bell clanged on top of the firehall. Smoke rose across town. Fred sprinted to the big red truck and yanked the hose. Nothing happened. The nozzle hung loose. The hose fittings were cracked. His axe was rusted shut in its bracket. New gear had been ordered weeks ago, but it never came. "I can't fight a fire with broken tools," Fred said. He gripped the steering wheel and stared at the smoke. Then he remembered where his gear had gone. Every parcel in town passed through the sorting hub. His crates of nozzles and hoses had to be sitting there, stuck on a shelf. Fred started the truck and drove straight to the sorting hub. Long conveyor belts rattled inside. Boxes rolled past numbered chutes. Workers ducked out of his way as he ran through the receiving bays. "I need my fire gear," he called. "It's an emergency. Town's burning." A worker pointed to bay six. Fred spotted three crates stamped with the fire department seal. He tore them open. Coiled hoses. Shining brass nozzles. A sharp new axe. He loaded the crates onto the truck himself. His arms burned. He didn't stop. He fitted a fresh hose to the pump and locked the new nozzle in place. The seal held tight. Fred raced back toward the smoke. The truck's lights flashed red and blue. He reached a burning shed behind a cottage. Flames climbed the roof. A crowd stood back, helpless. Fred jumped down and aimed his new nozzle. He pulled the lever. Water blasted out in a hard, steady stream. He soaked the flames until steam hissed and the fire died. The roof held. The cottage stood safe. The crowd cheered. Fred wiped soot from his yellow helmet and smiled. He had working gear at last. He had put out his first fire. The badge felt one step closer. Then a worker from the sorting hub ran up, out of breath. "Fred, those crates," she said. "Two of them weren't yours. You grabbed the town's whole emergency supply. The hospital needed those hoses today." Fred looked at the empty crates in his truck. He had fixed his own gear. But now the rest of Storyland had none. And somewhere, another alarm was already ringing.
