Chapter 6

Henry sat in the courthouse waiting room, staring at the notice in his hands. The judge had rejected his petition due to a procedural error—he'd filed in the wrong county. His uncle's property transfers had been processed through a different jurisdiction, one with separate records and officials. The photographs, the witness statement, even the bell he'd rung in the square—none of it mattered now. He'd have to start over from the beginning in a new courthouse thirty miles away. The plaque felt heavy in his lap, a premature celebration that now mocked his mistake. Outside, he walked past a cracked stone monument near the entrance. Broken scales of justice tilted on top, and a faded Texas star decorated the base. The cracks ran deep through the surface like the monument had been damaged years ago and never repaired. Henry touched the rough stone and felt his confidence crack the same way. He'd wasted weeks building a case in the wrong place. He carried the plaque toward the bulletin board near the square, thinking he should post a correction about his victory announcement. But when he reached the weathered wooden frame, he saw someone had already pinned up a notice. It claimed Henry Whitehorse had lied about his evidence and tried to steal family property through false claims. The paper looked fresh, the ink still dark against the sun-bleached board. His hands shook as he pulled it down and crumpled it. Henry sat on a bench between two tall pillars of dark ironwood that stood near the courthouse wall. The wood grain showed centuries of erosion, smoothed by wind and sand into shapes that looked almost alive. He set the plaque down and pressed his palms against his face. Someone was working against him, spreading lies while he stumbled through procedural mistakes. The old songs from his dreams felt distant now, like they'd stopped calling. He'd have to drive thirty miles tomorrow and start again, but tonight he sat in the shadow of the pillars and let the failure settle into his chest.
