Chapter 1

Iliana Van Helsing walked into the throne room of Castle Dracul with a loaded crossbow in her hands. She had come to end the killing. For a hundred years, her family had hunted monsters into near-extinction. Now she carried a new plan: a truce with Dracula himself, the one bargain that might free the world from bloodshed for good. Her father would call it treason. She called it the only way left. Dracula sat on a black stone throne. A gold dragon glinted on his chest. He watched her cross the long floor and did not rise. "A Van Helsing in my house," he said. "Your ancestor believed he burned me in London. Yet here you stand, asking for peace." Iliana lifted the crossbow and slid a stake into the chamber. The mechanism clicked, sharp and clear in the silence. "I built this myself," she said. "I can put six through your heart before you leave that chair. I did not come to beg. I came to deal as an equal." Dracula's guards tensed along the walls. He raised one gloved hand and stopped them. His red eyes stayed calm. "Bold," he said. "I respect boldness. Lower your weapon, and we will talk." A woman stepped from the shadows behind the throne. Her red hair fell past a veil that trailed far beyond the doorway. This was the Mother, Ioana Tepes, Dracula's queen and the witch whose magic hid this whole city from the human world. She did not look at the crossbow. She looked at Iliana's throat. "That necklace," the Mother said. Her voice was low and even. She came closer and studied the silver pendant with its crystal stone. "Old protection magic. Layered. Strong." She turned to Dracula. "You could not kill her tonight. Not easily. That charm would break your hand before it broke her." Dracula leaned forward. Something new crossed his face. Not fear. Interest. "Then we truly meet as equals," he said. "Speak your terms, hunter." Iliana lowered the crossbow. Her mind raced. She had prepared for one enemy. But the Mother's words revealed a truth she had missed. A truce with Dracula meant nothing if others could break it. "Any peace I make with you," Iliana said slowly, "who else must honor it?" Dracula smiled without warmth. "There are four clans beyond these walls. Nordic. Aztec. The Crown of the South. Clan Minamoto. They obey me in name. In truth, each hungers for my throne." He let the words settle. "Bind yourself to me, and one of them will hunt you to prove me weak." Iliana stood still. She had walked in prepared to face a king. Now she saw four hidden knives at her back, and she did not know a single face that held them. Her weapon meant nothing against enemies she could not name. Her truce was possible. But she could not protect it blind. Before she signed anything, she had to learn the clans.
