Chapter 4

For three days Lily rehearsed. She stood at her clinic desk and practiced what she might say to Martin. Every line sounded wrong. Mama had told her to go see him, but Lily had no plan, and showing up cold could break what little peace they had. So she stalled. She told herself she wasn't ready. Then a walk by the water made the choice for her. Fallen leaves drifted on the mirrored lake. On the far shore stood a small house on tall stilts, its steps climbing to a porch above the reflection. Near the shoreline, two large figures worked over a leaning wooden sign. She knew the taller one at once. Martin. His football helmet caught the light. He drove a post into the ground while the other man held it steady. Lily's wings pulled tight against her back. She almost turned. But the second man looked up first. "That one there," he called, pointing at her. "Come settle a bet, would you?" He was a stocky scarecrow in an old brim hat, straw poking from his sleeves. His painted grin never moved, but his voice was warm. Barnaby, Martin's cousin. She had heard he taught somewhere far off and had come home after years away. Lily walked over. Her heart knocked. She had no words ready, none at all. Martin looked up from the post. "Lily." One word. He said her name the way he stated facts, then went back to the sign. That was all. No anger. No question. Just her name, plain, like she belonged near this lake as much as the leaves did. Barnaby watched them both. "Martin says the sign leans east. I say west." He tapped the weathered board. It read Lake Sibaya in faded paint. "You have eyes. Which is it?" Lily looked at the sign, then at Martin. The old fear had built the moment into something huge. But the moment was small. A crooked sign. A held post. A cousin needing a tiebreaker. "East," she said. "It leans east." Martin gave a short nod. "Told you." Barnaby laughed and let go of the post to raise both hands. "Outvoted. The professor bows." He looked between them, and his voice dropped a little. "You two know each other well, I take it." "We did," Lily said. She did not run from it this time. Martin wiped his hands on his uniform. He met her eyes. "Sign's near done," he said. "You can stay. If you want." The words were bare, but they were an open door. Lily had come with nothing to say and had feared she'd make things worse. Instead she stood on the shore, invited to stay. "Okay," she said. "I'll stay." She knelt and steadied the post herself. Her wing brushed Martin's arm. Neither of them moved away. The old fear was gone, and a harder question took its place. Now she had to learn what he still felt.
