Chapter 1
Liora's eyes snap open mid-step. Her bare feet press against cold earth. She doesn't remember leaving her bed or opening the door, but here she is, standing in the forest clearing with no memory of choosing to come. The trees around her hold perfectly still. No wind moves through the branches. No rustle of leaves. No distant owl call. For the first time in longer than she can remember, the forest feels completely silent. The quiet sits heavy in her chest, waiting. She came here to check — she always comes to check — but tonight something is different. The forest isn't asking for anything.
She turns slowly, scanning the darkness for whatever pulled her from sleep. Her gaze catches on a tree she's never noticed before. A golden lantern hangs in its branches, casting warm light across a carved wooden door set into the trunk. The door stands slightly open. Inside, she can see a small room with nothing but a bed and a single window. No desk to watch from. No chair positioned for keeping guard. Just a place to sleep, as if sleep were enough. The lantern's glow doesn't flicker or dim. It simply burns, steady and unbothered, while the forest around it stays quiet. Liora takes one step toward the door, then stops. She realizes she's been holding her breath, waiting for the forest to need her. It doesn't.
She walks past the tree instead, moving deeper into the clearing. A line of small lanterns stretches along the ground ahead, each one dark and waiting. She's seen them before in daylight, but never thought about them at night. They don't need to be lit. They don't need her to light them. The forest holds them in the dark, and they rest there, unlit and fine. Liora stops walking. Her hands hang at her sides. She stands in the silence and waits for the pull to check something, fix something, watch something. It doesn't come. For the first time, she lets herself wonder if the forest has been resting all along, every night she came to guard it. The question changes everything.
Something warm presses against her palm. She looks down and finds herself holding a lantern she doesn't remember picking up. The metal handle curves over her wrist like a purse strap. Soft yellow light spills from its glass panels, bright enough to see by. She turns it over in her hands, searching for the moment she reached for it, the decision to carry it. Nothing comes. The forest gave her light without her asking. She lifts her gaze to the dark trees and the unlit lanterns on the ground. They've been holding themselves all this time. They didn't need her watching. The lantern in her hand grows warmer. Liora takes one slow breath, then another. She turns back toward home, carrying light she didn't earn.
