Chapter 1

Lord Chancellor Gideon Ironclad meant to name a killer, but first he had to survive his own bench. For thirty-one years, one case had gnawed at him. Three men burned in a warehouse. The man they hanged for it signed his confession at two in the morning, no barrister beside him. A senior official put his name to that paper. Ironclad meant to find him and drag him into the light. That morning, a clerk set a rolled scroll on his desk instead of a case file. A red wax seal held it shut. The seal bore a court insignia. He broke it. The message was short. Drop the old case, or be buried with it. No signature. Only that stamped crest, the kind a dozen judges could press. Ironclad's clockwork heart ticked hard against his ribs. The insignia told him nothing and everything. Someone on his own bench had sent this. Until he knew who, every judge who nodded at him could be the hand that wrote it. He could not fight an enemy he could not name. He carried the scroll out of the pale stone courthouse. He went to the one man in the city he still trusted with a secret. Rajesh Patel ran The Clarion, and he had known Ironclad longer than either liked to admit. He found the editor bent over a proof sheet, pen behind his ear, clockwork glasses whirring as they measured the print. "You look like a man who read his own obituary," Rajesh said. He did not look up. Ironclad set the scroll on the desk. "Someone wants me dead. They stamped it with a court seal. I cannot tell whose." Rajesh lifted the scroll. His glasses clicked, focusing on the wax. "A crest is a mask. But wax remembers hands." He turned it under the lamp. "See here. The stamp pressed crooked. The lower prong is worn flat." "A dozen men hold that seal." "A dozen men hold the crest. One man's seal is broken." Rajesh set it down. "I keep records of every warrant this court prints. Every seal leaves its own scar on the page." He pulled a thick ledger from a shelf and ran his thumb down the impressions. He stopped. He turned the book toward Ironclad. One warrant seal matched. The same worn prong. The same crooked press. Beneath it, a name signed in a steady old hand. Ironclad read it and went still. It was the name of the senior official who signed the two AM confession. The same man now sat on his bench, robed and honored, a fellow judge. "There's your enemy," Rajesh said. "And your answer to the old case. The same man. Convenient, or damning." Ironclad closed the ledger. His hands did not shake. "Now I know his face," he said. "He does not yet know I know it."
