Chapter 1

Marina Shellcrest had built the Turtle Bay Party Bar with her own hands, she built it right next to the Ferris wheel on turtle bay party islands beaches. There was a huge festival drawing close and tonight three judges stood inside it deciding if she deserved the island's crown for best tender. She spotted them by their notepads. They watched her pour. That was the one thing she had left her old job to escape, and now it decided everything. She wanted Bartender of the Year. The festival crown would make her bar untouchable. She dried her hands on her turtle-patterned apron and reached for the good bottles. Then the crowd broke her rhythm. Vacationers pressed six deep against the bar. Hands waved cash. Voices shouted over the music from her jukebox inside the bar. Someone knocked a glass. It shattered on the floor. A drink sloshed across her neon bottles and muddied their glow. Marina poured faster. It only made things worse. Two orders got mixed up. A man complained loud enough for the judges to hear. One judge wrote something down. Marina's stomach dropped. Sloppy service in front of them would sink her whole run. She could not out-pour a mob. She saw that now. The bar's neon light strips flickered under spilled liquor. The armbands on her wrists glowed steady, the only calm thing in the chaos. She had to change the game, not the speed. Marina set down her shaker. She grabbed her Riptide, the neon drink no one on the island could copy, and climbed onto the bar top. The crowd looked up. She raised the glass high so it caught the party lights. "You want this?" she called. "Get in line, please." She pointed to the two glowing turtle columns beside the bar. Each one stood tall, wrapped in party lights, a bright green turtle shining on its front. "Line starts there. First one, second one. I pour for whoever waits. Nobody else." For a second nothing happened. Then a woman near the front laughed and stepped toward the first column. Two more followed. The mob had no shape before. Now it had a spine. The pushing eased. Cash stopped waving in her face. Marina climbed down. She worked the line one guest at a time. She could see each order now. She poured clean. She poured slow enough to pour right. The broken-glass panic drained out of the room. A judge walked the length of the new line. He watched the crowd wait in order. He watched Marina hand a Riptide across the bar without a drop spilled. He nodded once and wrote in his notepad. By last call the floor was swept and the columns still anchored a tidy line. Marina had beaten the rush. She let herself breathe. Then the head judge leaned over the bar. "Strong save," she said. "But the final round isn't about crowd control. Every finalist serves the same drink, side by side, judged blind." She tapped the empty Riptide glass. “keep it up and you’ll have a spot in this competition.”
