Chapter 1

Moonbeam Shadows walked through the mushroom woods, and the wind would not stop talking about him. He heard his own approach carried ahead on a small voice, thin as a reed, repeating one word: coming. He had given up the ability to want warmth so that no living thing could read him, yet the wind read him anyway. At the heart of these woods sat a quiet thing built through love. An old guardian kept it. He meant to find that heart, still it, and sit on it forever. He stopped beside a stack of mushroom caps piled into a tall cone at the path's edge. He had passed three of these markers already. His dark did not lift from them when he moved on. It clung to the caps like wet cloth and stayed. Behind him, the trail he had walked was a line of cones drowning in shadow that would not retreat. The wind spoke again, closer to his ear this time. He is coming. He is close. A pale feather drifted down through the mushroom canopy and caught on a cap beside him. It glowed faintly, its quills bent, as if dropped from a wing he could not see. He understood. The spirit was leaving proof along the path so the listener at the end would believe the warning. Somewhere ahead, a half-fox woman in a small cabin at the tree line was hearing every word. He knew her shape from the wind's own grief. She had once moved with these spirits. She was trying to give them their voices back, and they were spending those voices on him. If the warning kept running ahead, the heart would be guarded before he reached the gate. He had to take the voice out of the air. He knelt and pressed his palm flat to the ground beneath the cone. His dark went down into the soil and then up, climbing the air in a slow column. It did not blow. It settled. Sound thinned around him. The wind tried to speak and produced nothing. The feather on the cap dimmed to bone white and lay still. He held the silence outward, pushing it through the trees in a widening ring, until he felt the small voice ahead of him snap off mid-word. The path went quiet all the way to the tree line. He stood. Far ahead, past the last of his cones, an ancient wooden gate waited at the edge of the heart's protection, its base ringed with clustered mushrooms. Nothing carried his name toward it now. But the silence he had made was the same silence the dark moonflowers made, and the woman in the cabin would know that silence the moment it touched her door. She would not be warned of him. She would be warned by him. He picked up the dull feather and started walking.
