Chapter 1

Nikolai Volkov wanted to be the empire's most sought-after stylist, but this morning no one would even glance at his door. He stood inside Clockwork Curls and watched people pass. His scissors ticked in his hand. He believed a precise cut could change something real in a person, not just their hair. Yet a great cut meant nothing if no one came to sit in his chair. He looked at his window. Bare. Just glass and dust and the faint reflection of his own smirk. His mother taught him to never act without intention. He had inherited her care but not her crowd. The finest work in the city stayed hidden behind an empty pane. The bell rang. Aiko Kimura stepped in, cradling something under a cloth. She was his oldest friend, an engineer who built clockwork birds that carried secret messages. She set the bundle down and pulled the cloth away. A tiny brass bird sat inside a small cage, its wings folded, its head tilted as if listening. "You look like a man staring at his own grave," she said. Her voice had a soft, musical lilt. "What troubles you?" "My window," Nikolai said. "Empty. People walk past like the shop isn't here. I could cut hair that changes lives, and they'd never know." Aiko wandered to the glass. She touched it, then drifted a moment, eyes far away. "When I want a bird to be noticed," she said slowly, "I don't make it sing louder. I make it strange enough that people must stop and ask what it is." Nikolai turned. An idea sharpened in him. "A hairstyle. Not on a customer. On display. Something no one could ignore." They worked past noon. Nikolai built the tallest updo he had ever made, black hair coiled into towering loops. He wired brass gears into the curls. Aiko lent her small caged bird, and he nestled it at the crown, so the clockwork creature seemed to nest in the hair itself. Fine gold wire framed the whole thing. He carried the finished piece to the window and set it on its stand. Then he waited. A woman stopped first. She pointed. A man beside her leaned close to the glass. Within an hour a small knot of people gathered outside, murmuring, tapping the window, laughing at the tiny bird in its cage of curls. The bell rang. A stranger stepped in and asked how much a cut would cost. Nikolai smiled his slight smirk. The window had done its work. But by evening the crowd had grown loud and thick. Faces pressed the glass. A man in a fine coat rapped on the door and said the Guild had questions about a shop drawing this much notice without their leave. Nikolai's empty window was full now. His trouble had only changed its shape.
