Chapter 9

Sarah reached the warehouse just before dawn, the leader and Marvin flanking her as she swept her flashlight across the rusted loading dock. The chain-link fence had collapsed years ago, and the main doors hung open on broken hinges. Inside, rows of metal shelving stretched into darkness. The beam caught something that made Sarah's stomach drop—a fortified shipping container sat in the center of the floor, its reinforced doors sealed with fresh welds. Someone had moved it here recently. The leader circled the container twice before pointing to scuff marks leading toward the back wall. Sarah followed the trail to a massive wooden scaffold erected beneath the conveyor maintenance access. Empty harness hooks lined the top platform. Every single one. Marvin climbed the scaffold and confirmed what Sarah already knew. "They took everything. Professional grade, probably six or eight units based on the hook spacing." Sarah's flashlight swept the floor beneath the scaffold and caught scattered photographs pinned under a rusted chemical bottle. She knelt and picked up the nearest print—a black and white image of the factory's east wall, taken from inside. Another showed the fake subway entrance from an angle she recognized. The hidden occupant hadn't just been monitoring the sublevel. They'd been documenting every approach, every access point, building a complete record of Vault 17's concealed infrastructure. The darkroom setup was deliberate, professional. Whoever had been living in that subway platform had known exactly what they were looking for. The leader stood beside Sarah and studied the photographs in silence. Finally: "They've been preparing for this descent longer than we have. They have the equipment, the documentation, and a head start we can't close." Sarah met the leader's eyes and saw the shift happening—not suspicion of her, but inclusion. The leader handed her one of the photographs. "We need to know who we're racing to the bottom. That's your problem now, not just mine." Sarah took the photograph and felt the weight of genuine partnership settle across her shoulders. The Atomic Cats leader wasn't asking her to prove her value anymore. They were asking her to solve a threat to them both.
