Chapter 1

Sedna stood at the harbor's edge, watching the water lap against the pilings where her market should be. The northern slips landlord had stalled twice now, and the people waiting for her to succeed were running out of time. She needed ground, and she needed it soon, or everything she'd promised would sink before it ever floated. A woman approached from behind, footsteps quiet on the worn planks. She stopped beside Sedna and nodded toward a smaller slip to the south, one Sedna hadn't considered before. "That plot's mine," the woman said. "Cheaper than what you're chasing. Available now." Sedna turned, studying her face for the usual tells—the flicker of eyes toward her tail, the half-step back. Nothing came. The woman met her gaze straight on. "I need help with the house. Cleaning, mending, small things. You do that, you stay." Sedna's chest loosened for the first time in weeks. The plot was smaller, yes, but it was real ground, and it was now. She nodded before the woman finished speaking. By sundown, she held a rolled parchment in her hands, fine and carefully lettered, welcoming her to the space that would become her market. The words were warm, almost too warm, but Sedna didn't question them. She had her ground at last. The house stood near the water, built from sturdy wood and stone with a seashell fixed above the door. Snow covered the roof in a thick blanket. Inside, the rooms were small but solid, with windows that looked out over the slip she would claim. Sedna set the parchment on the table and ran her fingers along the edge. The market wouldn't be what she'd imagined—not the northern slips, not the place she'd fought for—but it would exist. The wanderers and outcasts she'd promised a space could gather here. She would sweep floors and mend what needed mending, and in exchange, she would build what they needed. The weight of waiting lifted. She had a place to start. The next morning, Sedna walked the length of her new plot. The slip was smaller than the northern space, but wide enough for vendor stalls and room to gather. Near the water's edge stood a statue—three harbor seals balanced around a bright beach ball, their mouths open in carved joy. Someone had placed it there years ago, the woman said, and left it when they moved on. Sedna touched the smooth stone. It would stay. It would be the first thing wanderers saw when they arrived, a sign that this place was different. She turned back toward the house, already planning where the first stalls would go.
