Chapter 2

Shaska Driftclaw needed to learn the northern clan's ways before they would even look at her. She started by watching them from the dunes. The warriors trained each morning with weapons she had never held. Their spears had glass heads that caught the light. She studied how they moved, how they planted their feet, how they shifted their weight before each throw. After watching for three days, she walked down to their training grounds. The warriors stopped and stared at her mixed-blood markings. She picked up a spear anyway. The shaft felt wrong in her claws. The needles wrapped around it pricked her scales. She threw it at the nearest target and missed completely. The warriors laughed and went back to their practice. Shaska retrieved the spear and threw again. By the tenth throw, her claws adjusted to the needles. By the twentieth, the spear hit the edge of the target. One warrior looked up. He didn't smile, but he watched her next throw. Shaska practiced until the sun reached its peak. Her scales ached and her arms burned, but she had their attention now. She needed more than training skills to join the clan. An older warrior pointed toward a dark opening in the rocks when she asked about the leader. The cavern entrance had tall windows carved into the stone, their shapes sharp and strange. Shaska walked through the opening. Inside, the air felt cooler. Light streamed through the windows and made patterns on the floor. She found the clan leader sitting on a flat stone at the back of the space. He wore bone decorations across his chest. Shaska stopped and waited. The leader studied her markings without speaking. Finally, he asked why she had come. She told him she wanted to prove herself worthy. He said the clan did not accept outsiders easily. She said she would do whatever they required. The leader nodded once. He told her to return to the training grounds and learn. When she could throw as well as his warriors, they would talk again. The clan leader stood and walked to a wooden workbench at the side of the cavern. Carvings covered its surface and legs. He gestured to the tools and materials laid out there. Before she could prove herself with weapons, he said, she needed to understand how the clan survived. The bench held dried plants, clay bowls, and grinding stones. He told her the clan valued those who could prepare food and medicine in the traditional ways. Shaska moved closer and picked up one of the plants. She had seen similar ones growing near rocks, but she didn't know their purpose. The leader watched her examine it. He said she would learn from the clan's keepers starting tomorrow. They would teach her which plants healed and which fed. Only then would her training with the warriors mean something. Shaska placed the plant back on the bench carefully. She had taken her first real step toward belonging. The leader walked to the cavern entrance and pointed outside. A device stood near the opening, built from wood and metal parts. He called it a smoke shaper. The clan used it to send messages across long distances and guide travelers to the gathering hut. He showed her how to add fuel and adjust the openings to create different smoke patterns. Each pattern meant something specific—danger, welcome, gathering time. Shaska watched him demonstrate three signals. Then he handed her the fuel and stepped back. She copied his movements and sent a thin column of smoke into the sky. The leader adjusted her grip on the controls. She tried again. This time the smoke rose straight and held its shape. He told her she would learn all the clan's signals in the coming days. Communication mattered as much as any weapon. Shaska understood what he was really saying—the clan would test everything she could do before they decided about her.
