Chapter 1

Sunbeam Foxworth had eleven jokes and no way to know if a single one worked. He sat in the karaoke lounge with a notebook full of them, all penned in his neat paw. The jokes were clever. His mirror had laughed for years. But a mirror was not a crowd, and he dreamed of a comedy club where every guest left smiling. He could not build that club on jokes he had never tested. Tonight the lounge held open mic. A chalkboard by the door said so in pink loops. Sunbeam smoothed his black suit and joined the sign-up line. The room smelled of buttered popcorn. Neon guitars buzzed on the walls. Amateurs clutched papers and mouthed their words. When the host called his name, his stomach dropped like a stone. He climbed onto the small stage. A spotlight found him. Below, maybe thirty faces waited, forks paused over plates. Sunbeam gripped the microphone and felt his tail shake. "Good evening," he said. "I'm a fox in a fancy suit. Which is strange, since I keep raiding hen houses. The chickens keep asking me to dress down." Silence. Someone coughed. A glass clinked in the back. Sunbeam's ears flattened. His whole plan lived or died on the next ten seconds. He pressed on. "My mother said I'd never make people laugh. So I told her a joke. She's still not talking to me. That's how I know it landed." A rabbit near the front snorted. Then two others laughed. The sound spread like a match catching dry grass. By the third joke, the room rocked. A badger slapped the table. Popcorn flew. Sunbeam's shaking tail went still. He delivered his best line, the one about the fox and the traffic light, and the crowd howled. He finished. They clapped and stamped. Sunbeam stepped down grinning wider than he ever had. It worked. The jokes worked on real people. His dream had a foundation now. Then a voice cut through the applause. Cool, clipped, unimpressed. "Passable timing. Weak material." Sunbeam turned. An owl leaned against the bar, a small notebook open in one wing. He wore round glasses and did not smile. He wrote something, tore the page, and held it out. "Owlighan Hootenbrook. I review theater in this city. I wandered in expecting nothing. You gave me exactly that." He tapped the page. "Three of your jokes are stolen shapes. One is genuinely funny. The rest are noise the crowd forgave because they'd been drinking." Sunbeam took the paper. Cramped notes covered both sides. His stomach twisted, but he could not look away. "People laughed," Sunbeam said. "People laugh at anything after popcorn and beer," the owl said. "You want a club where every guest leaves smiling? Then you need material that survives a sober critic. Right now, you don't have it." He closed his notebook and left. Sunbeam stood holding the review, the applause still ringing, knowing his real work had just begun.
