Chapter 3

By morning the court knew. The Mother had reached for blood and grasped air. She spent the day below Tower Strigoi, planning how to win back power. Then a servant brought word that turned her cold. Ali Gamal, her partner in the daylight work, was to be married that night. The bride was Carmilla de Styria. The wedding was hers to host, not the Mother's. The Mother knew Ali well. For years he had built the tools of their kind and worked beside her to beat the sun. He was the one mind she trusted with the daylight rite. If Carmilla claimed him, she claimed his knowledge and his stones. The Mother wrapped her long veil close and climbed to the great hall of Castle Dracul. The hall was full. A crew of young vampires in modern clothes lined the walls, red-eyed and whispering. At the far end stood Ali in his orange and gold robes. Beside him waited Carmilla in black lace stitched with silver. The Mother had never met her, but she saw at once why the court leaned toward her. Every face in the room turned when Carmilla moved. "You marry tonight," the Mother said to Ali. "You told me nothing." "It was decided this week," Ali said. He did not soften it. "Her house will fund the daylight work. I need the coin." The Mother turned to Carmilla. "He is my partner. Not yours." Carmilla did not blink. "He was. The court saw you fail in the market. A partner with no power is a burden." She stepped closer. Her voice dropped, warm and sure. "Stand with us tonight. Bless the match. The room already loves me. Fighting me makes you look weaker still." The Mother felt the pull of it. The words wanted to slide past her guard. She saw the young crew nodding, swayed already. Carmilla's gift worked the whole hall like a current. The Mother had no magic to answer it. If she raged and lost again, every clan would write her off for good. So she did the one thing Carmilla did not expect. She raised her hands and blessed the marriage. "Let it stand," the Mother said, loud and clear. "A strong house for a strong mind." The room eased. Carmilla smiled, thinking she had won. But the Mother met Ali's eyes as she spoke. "You will still build with me. Marriage does not end our work." It was a claim, made before the whole court. Ali gave a small nod. He had heard it. The wedding went on. Carmilla took Ali's hand under the glass domes. The court cheered the Mistress of Darkness. Yet the Mother walked out with her veil clean behind her and her temper leashed. She had lost her only partner to another woman's house. Now she had to win him back through the wife who owned him.
