Chapter 1

Isabella Seraphim padded through the crowded harbor marketplace, her wings tucked close against her sides. The salty breeze carried whispers of ship schedules and cargo manifests. Her ears swiveled, catching fragments of conversations between sailors and merchants. She dreamed of building a network across Nereidum—informants in every port who could warn her when pirates planned their raids. Today, she would find her first contact among these dockworkers. A strange glow caught her eye near the fish stalls. She trotted closer and found a bio-alien message board pulsing with light. Holographic bounties for space pirates flickered across its surface, mixing with trade notices and crew wanted ads. Isabella studied the board, watching how sailors stopped to read and post messages. This could work. She could leave coded messages here for anyone willing to share information about pirate movements. Her tail wagged once. The network had to start somewhere, and this living board would be her first tool. But posting messages in the open carried risks. Pirates had spies too. Isabella needed a safer way to exchange secrets with her contacts. She wandered past stacked crates and coiled ropes, searching for something better. A cluster of red rocks sat between two dock posts. She sniffed one. The smooth surface felt warm and had strange patterns carved into it. Isabella pawed at the largest rock. It split open like a shell, revealing a hollow center. Perfect. Her informants could hide messages inside and she could check it without anyone noticing. She pushed the rock closed with her nose and memorized its location. The message board would attract helpers. The hidden rock would keep them safe. Now she needed a meeting place. Somewhere quiet where her contacts could share what they learned without being seen. Isabella left the docks and followed a narrow path between buildings. The trail led away from the harbor noise, winding through brush and stones. She pushed through purple moss hanging from rock faces. The path opened into a grotto hidden from the main port. Rust-colored boulders ringed pools of bright aqua water. Steam rose from the surface. This place felt protected. She could meet her informants here and learn the pirates' plans. Isabella dipped her paw in one pool. The warm water soothed her tired legs. Her network would grow from this hidden spot. The message board, the secret rock, and now this grotto. Everything she needed was in place.

Chapter 2

Isabella sat at the edge of the grotto, her paws dipping into the warm aqua water. She had the places—the message board, the hollow rock, the hidden meeting spot. But she didn't have any contacts yet. Her network needed people willing to share secrets about pirate movements. She needed to find sailors willing to talk. Isabella left the grotto and headed toward the outer edge of the harbor. Past the busy main docks, she discovered a structure that seemed to float in the shadows between active piers. The space dock looked sleek and quiet, tucked away where fewer merchants wandered. Ships docked here had darker paint and dimmer lights. Perfect. The sailors here might need coin more than loyalty to pirate crews. Isabella approached a dockworker coiling rope near a landing pad. She sat and watched him work, her wings shifting slightly. He glanced at her, then at the small pouch tied to her collar. His eyes narrowed with interest. This was how it would start—one contact, one exchange, one secret at a time. The dockworker crouched down and studied her collar more closely. Isabella held still, letting him see the coin pouch. He looked around, checking if anyone watched. Then he reached out slowly and touched the pouch. She didn't move away. He understood. Information for coin. He pulled a small data chip from his pocket and tucked it into her collar alongside the pouch. Isabella stood and gave a small nod. Her first informant. She turned and trotted back toward the grotto, the chip pressing against her neck. The network had begun. Soon she would have contacts in every shadow, sharing pirate plans before ships even left port. Her tail lifted as she walked. The dream was becoming real. Back at the grotto, Isabella realized her informants would need to find her after dark. The path through the brush was too hidden without light. She searched the area and found a lantern hanging from a curved dark growth near the entrance. The lantern glowed soft green, bright enough to guide someone through the purple moss. She tested the path herself, walking back and forth. The green light marked the way clearly. Now her contacts could come at night when fewer eyes watched the harbor. Isabella returned to the warm pools and placed the data chip beside the water. She would check it soon, but first she needed rest. Her network had its first member, its first secret, and a safe way for others to join. The foundation was set. Everything she built next would grow from this beginning. Isabella woke as the twin moons rose over Nereidum. She stretched her wings and picked up the data chip in her teeth. But she needed a way to handle these coded messages safely. Near the pools, she found a basin formed from red-orange stones. Dark plum moss clung to its edges. Water bubbled up from below, clear and clean. She dropped the chip into the basin and watched the water rinse away dust from the docks. The stones kept it safe while she worked. This basin would clean every message her informants brought. She could read them here, then hide them in the hollow rock if needed. Isabella pulled the chip from the water and set it on a flat stone to dry. The grotto now had everything—a meeting place, a light for night visits, and a basin to handle secrets. Her network was ready to grow.
