Chapter 1

Kevin Dallas adjusted his Trade Post cap and studied the warehouse from across the muddy street. His whiskers twitched. The rival syndicate met here every third night, and tonight he'd slip inside as a delivery driver. One paw rested on the fake work order in his jacket pocket. He'd spent weeks building this cover identity. The real work started at the Crazy Eight Pub and Boardinghouse, a two-story ranch with light red brick and grey wood siding. That's where the syndicate's inner circle lived and planned their operations. Kevin needed to get inside those walls, earn their trust, and learn their secrets. First, he had to establish his presence in Ivanpath Village. He walked to the blue metal mailbox marked "Ivanpath Post" and dropped in three letters addressed to fake contacts. Anyone watching would see just another delivery worker checking his route. At the Vault-Tec pay phone station down the block, he pretended to make a call while scanning faces in the street. A heavyset badger emerged from the Crazy Eight's front door. Kevin memorized the face and turned away. Small steps would get him through that door eventually. Tonight was about being seen, being normal, being forgettable. The real infiltration would come later, once he'd woven himself into the fabric of this village.

Chapter 2

Kevin needed to learn the village rhythms before anyone would trust him. He started his mornings at the same corner, watching workers shuffle past. He memorized faces, routes, and schedules. Each afternoon he walked the same loop through town, nodding at the same shopkeepers. The badger from the Crazy Eight passed him twice, then three times. On the fourth day, the badger nodded back. Kevin's chest tightened with hope, but he kept his pace steady and his expression blank. By week two, Kevin knew he needed tools for the next phase. He bought an olive green tool chest with desert camouflage canvas at the hardware store. The metal frame looked sturdy enough for outdoor work. He filled it with basic supplies and surveillance equipment buried underneath. Anyone searching it would see hammers and wrenches first. The chest sat ready, ordinary and forgettable. He installed a pole light outside the Crazy Eight's entrance one evening. The sleek fixture cast bright light across the steps and walkway. Kevin worked slowly, checking connections twice. The badger watched from the window, then came outside. "Nice work," the badger grunted. Kevin nodded and packed his tools. The light would help late arrivals see their path, and now the syndicate knew his face. The next morning, Kevin found Boarders Printing & Booksellers tucked behind the main street. The tan stone and red brick building looked small and quiet. Inside, an elderly fox sorted papers at a worn desk. Kevin asked about printing services, then mentioned he needed documents for a fresh start. The fox's eyes narrowed, then softened. "Come back Thursday," she said. Kevin left knowing his false identity would soon be real enough to open every door he needed.
