Chapter 1

Berry B-K sat in the school cafeteria and picked at her lunch. Her two dads hadn't spoken in three years. They lived in separate houses now. Berry moved between them each week, carrying messages neither would say out loud. She wanted them in the same room again. She wanted them to talk. Maybe even laugh together like they used to. Getting them to agree on anything seemed impossible, but Berry had to try. She pulled out her phone to call Dad A, then stopped. Dad B might check her phone records later. They always did that. She needed somewhere private to make the calls. Somewhere neither of them would find out until she had both of them ready to meet. After school, Berry walked three blocks past the corner store. A blue telephone booth stood by itself on the sidewalk. Snow covered its top and sides. She brushed off the door handle and stepped inside. The booth smelled like old metal and winter air. She fed coins into the slot and dialed Dad A's work number. Her fingers shook. "Hi, it's me," she said when he answered. "I need you to come to my school play next Friday. Seven o'clock." She hung up before he could ask questions. Then she dialed Dad B. Same words. Same time. Neither knew the other would be there. Berry pushed the door open and walked home through the snow. The hard part was done. Now she just had to get them to stay. The next morning, Berry walked to the town square before school started. A wooden bulletin board stood near the fountain, covered with colorful flyers. She pulled a folded paper from her backpack and pinned it to the board. The notice read: "Community Night - School Play - All Families Welcome - Friday 7pm." She stepped back and looked at it. Other families would be there too. Her dads couldn't make a scene with witnesses around. They'd have to sit through the whole play. Maybe they'd even talk to each other after. Berry adjusted her strawberry hair clip and headed to class. She had six days to make sure neither of them canceled. But the school play was just the start. Berry knew one meeting wouldn't fix three years of silence. She needed a real place where they could sit down together. A place that felt safe and calm. The Family Mediation Center opened last month near the library. Berry had seen it on her way home from Dad B's house. Clean windows and soft chairs inside. No angry voices or slammed doors. If she could get both dads to the play, she could ask them to come to one session. Just one hour to talk things through. Berry pulled out a notebook and wrote down what she'd say to them. The words had to be perfect. This was her chance to bring them back together.
