Chapter 1

Finster pushed his glasses up his snout and studied the wanted poster nailed to the tavern wall. His former boss, the Dark Commander, stared back at him with cold eyes. Finster's paw curled into a fist. He'd once served that tyrant, done terrible things under those orders. But now he'd make it right. He'd track down the Commander and end his reign of terror. Only then could Finster call himself good. The bartender leaned across the counter and jabbed a claw toward the mountains. "Saw him last week. Heading north to the old fortress." Finster's ears perked up. He knew that place—Moon Castle, with its silver walls that glowed at night. He'd helped the Commander take it years ago, back when he still followed orders without question. His stomach twisted at the memory. That castle was where he'd crossed the line, where innocent people had suffered because of him. Going back there wouldn't be easy, but it was the only way forward. He'd face the Commander in the same place where his mistakes began, and this time he'd make a different choice. Finster left the tavern at dawn. He needed to get stronger before facing the Commander. A training ground sat at the edge of town, empty and quiet. Wooden dummies stood in rows across the packed dirt. Archery targets lined the far end. Finster drew his sword and approached the nearest dummy. He swung once, then again. His muscles burned. Sweat soaked through his coat. He practiced blocks and strikes until his paws ached. The Commander was powerful, and Finster couldn't afford to lose. Not this time. He hit the dummy one last time, then stepped back and caught his breath. Moon Castle waited in the north, and soon he'd be ready to climb those silver walls and end this for good. Before heading north, Finster stopped at the town's bulletin board. The carved wood was covered in papers and notices. He pinned a message warning travelers about the Commander's route. Someone else had posted a report about strange lights near the castle. Another note described missing villagers. Finster read each one carefully. The Commander was gathering power again, just like before. But this time would be different. Finster tucked the information into his coat pocket and turned toward the northern road. His path was clear now—train hard, gather what he needed to know, then face his past at Moon Castle.
