Fiona Greene stood in front of the empty storefront, her breath fogging the glass. She pressed her palms against the cold window and stared at the bare concrete floor inside. This was the spot. This could be her animal shelter someday. Right now, she had two hundred dollars in her bank account and a dream that cost fifty thousand. She needed a plan, fast. The dog had floppy ears and a goofy smile. She cut a slot in the top and wrote "Animal Shelter Fund" across the bottom. It wasn't much, but people liked helping animals. She'd put it somewhere busy tomorrow. The next morning, Fiona set up a folding table in the park. She'd borrowed a hose attachment and basin from her neighbor and built a simple washing station. A hand-painted sign read "Pet Wash - $10." Two hours passed before her first customer arrived. A woman with a muddy terrier paid cash after Fiona scrubbed the dog clean. By sunset, Fiona had washed six dogs and earned sixty dollars. She dumped the coins from her donation box into her backpack. Seventeen dollars more. Fiona walked back to the empty storefront as the streetlights flickered on. She pulled out her phone and updated her savings tracker: two hundred seventy-seven dollars. The number glowed on her screen. It wasn't fifty thousand, but it was more than yesterday. She looked through the window again at the bare space inside.
