Chapter 1

Old Man Winter stood at the base of Frozen Tooth Pass, his gray robes rippling in the bitter wind. Ice crystals clung to his long beard. He gazed up at the rocky mountain trail that carved through the peaks above. For centuries, spring had melted his work here. Merchants and travelers crossed these slopes each year when the snow retreated. Not anymore. This mountain would know only winter. He would freeze this pass so deep that no thaw could ever reach it. The stones themselves would bow to frost. Old Man Winter raised his staff and took his first step up the path. The climb took three hours. His boots crunched through fresh powder. At the highest point, where winds howled between two peaks, he stopped. This spot controlled the entire pass. He pulled the weather vane from his pack. The metal device glowed with cold blue light. Icy patterns covered its surface like frozen spiderwebs. He drove it deep into the rocky ground. The vane spun once, then locked north. The wind obeyed instantly, shifting direction. It screamed down through the pass, carrying sheets of snow. Old Man Winter smiled. The pass would never see spring again. His eternal winter had begun. He descended back to the entrance of the pass. His staff struck the frozen earth three times. Blue light spread from the point of impact. Ice grew upward in jagged sheets, forming a massive spire. The structure rose higher than five men standing on each other's shoulders. Dark indigo light pulsed beneath its frozen surface. The spire marked this place as his. Anyone who approached would see it and know winter ruled here now. No merchant caravan would risk this route. No traveler would dare cross. Old Man Winter stepped back and watched frost spread across the rocks around the spire's base. The mountain had accepted his claim. But claiming the entrance was only the first step. He needed a place to rule from, a tower to watch over his frozen domain. Half a mile into the pass, an old stone spire rose from the mountainside. Some wizard had built it long ago, then abandoned it. Old Man Winter approached the ancient structure and placed both hands against its walls. Ice spread from his palms like cracks in glass. The stone disappeared beneath thick layers of frost. Massive ice spikes burst from the tower's top and sides, sharp as spears. The frozen wizard spire would be his throne. From here, he would guard his eternal winter and ensure no warmth ever touched this mountain again.

Chapter 2

Old Man Winter settled into his frozen tower and pulled out an ancient map. The parchment crackled as he unrolled it across the ice table. He needed to understand every trail, every cave, every hidden route through the pass. His finger traced the main road that merchants used each spring. Then he found the smaller paths that goat herders took. Three separate routes crossed through these peaks. He would need to freeze them all. The map showed a narrow canyon to the east and a ridge trail to the west. His weather vane controlled the center, but the outer paths remained vulnerable. He rolled up the map and tucked it into his robes. Tomorrow he would block the eastern canyon first. The next morning, he climbed higher into the mountains. Snow fell thick around him as he searched. His staff helped him move across the steep slopes. Then he saw it through the storm. An old stone building sat alone on a rocky ledge. Weathered walls rose from the snow with strange carvings along their surface. Old Man Winter pushed open the heavy door. Inside, he found metal instruments and glass tubes covered in dust. Charts hung on the walls showing wind patterns and storm movements. This place had been built to study the weather itself. He moved through the rooms, reading the faded notes left behind. The ancient observers had learned how storms grew and moved through these peaks. He traced his fingers over their drawings of air currents and pressure changes. This knowledge would help him strengthen his winter. He could make his storms stronger and his cold deeper. The old building had given him exactly what he needed to make the pass bow to his eternal freeze. Outside the observatory, he spotted a large cauldron half-buried in the snow. Frost patterns covered its surface in swirling designs. He brushed away the ice and examined it closely. The metal felt cold even through his gloves. This container would hold snow perfectly. He dragged it to a flat area where the wind howled strongest. Snow began filling it immediately, piling higher with each gust. Old Man Winter placed his hand on the rim and spoke three words in the old language. Blue light flashed across the frost patterns. The cauldron would gather snow endlessly now, storing it for his spells. When he needed to summon a blizzard or freeze a valley, the snow would be ready. He had found his ancient weather knowledge. He had secured his supply of frozen power. The pass would never escape his grip. Night fell across the mountains. Old Man Winter returned to his frozen tower carrying a bundle wrapped in cloth. He climbed to the highest balcony and unwrapped the ice crystals he had taken from the observatory. Each one glowed with pale blue light. He placed them along the tower's edge, spacing them in a wide circle. The crystals pulsed brighter as darkness spread. Cold radiated from them in waves, pushing the temperature lower with each passing moment. Frost crept across the rocks below. The air itself turned sharp enough to sting. These crystals would protect his tower through every night, spreading his winter magic across the slopes. Old Man Winter watched the blue glow reflect off the snow. His first real steps were complete. The pass had given him the tools he needed to make his dream of endless winter real.
