Chapter 1

Jólakötturinn prowled through the snow-covered village, her massive black paws silent against the frozen ground. Ice-blue eyes scanned each darkened window. She hunted those who disrespected the old ways—those who refused to give gifts during the sacred winter season. Her whiskers twitched as she caught the scent of wool and selfishness drifting from a nearby house. Inside, a family hoarded new clothes for themselves while their neighbors wore nothing but rags. The giant cat's lips curled back, revealing rows of sharp yellow teeth. Tonight, someone would learn why the old traditions mattered. She turned away from the house and padded toward the village center. Her claws scraped against frozen stone as she approached the old meeting place. From her fur, she pulled forth a glowing ice tablet, its surface covered in ancient runes. The tablet cast blue light across the snow. She placed it where all would see come morning. The runes spelled out a warning about those who kept gifts for themselves. Let them read it. Let them fear. This village would remember the old ways, or Jólakötturinn would remind them one selfish family at a time. Her work here was just beginning. Beyond the village square stood an ancient hall with snow-covered roofs and walls carved with old symbols. Jólakötturinn moved toward it, her fur bristling with purpose. This place would serve her well. Inside, she could track every selfish act, every broken tradition, every family that chose greed over sharing. The hall's high ceilings and empty rooms called to her. She pushed through the heavy doors and circled the main chamber. Her claws clicked against the stone floor. From here, she would watch. From here, she would hunt. The hall would become her base, and this village would be the first of many to learn respect for gift-giving. Winter had just begun, and she had much work ahead. Morning arrived, and Jólakötturinn moved through the market square. Merchants arranged their goods on wooden tables. She watched them closely, her tail swishing behind her. One vendor caught her attention—a cloth merchant who smiled at his customers while his hands moved quickly across a set of brass scales. The scales tipped unevenly as he measured fabric. He gave less than he promised, keeping extra cloth for himself. Jólakötturinn's eyes narrowed. She approached the table and placed one massive paw on the scales. They balanced perfectly under her touch. The merchant stumbled backward, his face pale. She had found her first target. The village would learn that fairness in gift-giving started with honesty in all exchanges. Her hunt had truly begun.
