Chapter 1

Keke Jackal leaned against the wooden post outside the Headstone saloon, her yellow eyes scanning the dusty street. She needed to find the demon who stole Marty's secret recipe, and the only way to track a creature like that was with information. Building a spy network in this frontier town wouldn't be easy, but she had to start somewhere. Her spies brought good intelligence, but passing messages back and forth meant too many face-to-face meetings. She needed a system that kept her people safe and hidden. The general store had exactly what she needed—sheets of special parchment that glowed faintly in the dark. The clerk called it Whispering Paper. Keke bought the whole stack and headed back to Anubis' Kennel. That night, she worked out a simple code with her best informant. They would leave messages tucked inside specific places around town—behind loose boards, under water troughs, inside hollow fence posts. Each spy would check their assigned spot twice a week. The parchment was thin enough to fold small and slip anywhere. Keke wrote her first coded note and placed it in a test location near the livery stable. By morning, it was gone, and a return message waited in its place with fresh news about demon sightings near the canyon. Her network was growing stronger, spreading like roots beneath Headstone's dusty streets. Soon she would have eyes everywhere, and the demon wouldn't be able to hide. Keke stood inside Anubis' Kennel, the black metal saloon she'd claimed as her base. Silver inlays traced patterns across the walls like veins of moonlight. This place looked like a coffin from the outside, but inside it was perfect for tracking her enemy. She spread a map across the bar and marked each location where her spies had spotted signs of the demon. Three marks near the canyon. Two by the old mine. One at the edge of town. The pattern was starting to show itself. She placed her revolver on the map and smiled. The demon had stolen Marty's recipe, but Keke would hunt it down. With her network in place and messages flowing through the dead drops, she was closer than ever. The hunt was on. But she needed more spies, and finding people she could trust meant meeting them face to face at least once. Keke purchased a special torch from a traveling merchant—a Spectre Beacon Torch with a cold, blue glow that reminded her of old burial chambers. She placed it in a window where only certain people would notice. When someone saw the light burning, they would know to come meet her in private. One by one, new recruits arrived at Anubis' Kennel. She looked each person in the eye and explained the rules. They would watch. They would listen. They would leave coded messages on the Whispering Paper. No one would know who else worked for her. The demon thought it could hide in Headstone, but Keke's network would flush it out. Every spy she recruited brought her one step closer to getting Marty's recipe back and making that demon pay.
