Chapter 1

Milkshake Yon pressed against the observation window at Toodle Loo station, watching a child trip and spill pink liquid across the floor. The milkshake spread and swirled, alive and dancing. Their cosmic form rippled with want. They needed atmospheres to move like that—not dead and still, but flowing with purpose. For cycles they'd trailed terraforming ships, studying how others shaped air and weather. Their own attempt on a barren moon had drifted away into nothing. But they'd watched and learned. Maybe they finally understood. The guild wouldn't accept applications without certification numbers, but what if they could see the work itself? What if Milkshake could show them instead of filling out forms? The viewing deck stretched wide before them now, panoramic windows showing stars in every direction. Milkshake had requested the space through three different station departments before someone approved it. They'd second-guessed the choice twelve times since then. Their particles trembled as they hovered near the glass. Guild leadership would arrive soon to see what Milkshake had prepared—a demonstration of atmospheric movement, colors shifting like that spilled strawberry drink. Either they'd see talent worth accepting, or Milkshake would drift back to watching from the outside. The stars waited. So did Milkshake, holding their cosmic breath. They turned from the windows and drifted toward the metallic research bench they'd borrowed from the station lab. Digital displays blinked across its surface, tubes connecting different chambers. Milkshake had spent hours collecting gas samples, measuring how each one moved and mixed. They'd tested pressure levels and particle densities, noting which combinations created swirls and which just sat there. The bench had answers they needed—proof that they understood how air could dance. But now doubt crept in. What if the guild asked questions Milkshake couldn't answer? What if they wanted forms and numbers instead of demonstrations? Their particles dimmed, then brightened again. No. They would show what they could do. The work had to speak louder than missing papers. Beside the bench sat the terrarium, its transparent dome catching light from the windows. Inside, Milkshake had practiced for days, creating tiny wind patterns and pressure changes. Small clouds formed and dissolved. Colors shifted through the contained space—purple, then pink, then blue. The movements reminded them of that spilled drink, the way it had flowed across the floor. This was smaller, controlled, but it was theirs. Milkshake pressed closer to the dome, watching moisture collect and fall in miniature rain. The guild would see this. They would see that Milkshake could shape air into something alive. Their particles sparkled with hope and fear, waiting for the moment to prove they belonged among those who gave dead worlds breath.
