Chapter 1

Aelara unlocked the back door of the old pawn shop and stepped inside. The barred windows threw stripes across the floor. She had bought the place cheap and made it her base. From here, she meant to take back the throne of Owl Shift, the kingdom her bloodline lost generations ago. She set the owl-headed ring on the counter. It was her only proof, and it was not enough. A silver bird on a worn leather band could not shout down a usurper's army. She pulled a weathered wooden sign from a crate. Faded red runes circled a sharp owl carved into the boards. Her grandmother had sworn it once hung above a royal gate. A buyer arrived at midday, a quiet woman from a farmhouse out past the fields. She studied the sign, then the ring. "Pretty," she said. "But pretty is not proof." A pink butterfly drifted through the open door and landed on the wood. The woman laughed and walked out. Aelara stood alone with her relics. She had laid out everything she owned, and the world had called it decoration. Words would never be enough. Heirlooms would never be enough. She locked the ring inside the counter and bolted the door. If no one would accept her blood as proof, she would have to find someone who remembered the kingdom itself. Tomorrow she would start hunting witnesses.

Chapter 2

Morning light cut through the bars of the pawn shop windows. Aelara opened her weathered journal on the counter. Its margins were crowded with crossed-out names and pressed leaves marking dead ends. Every lead had rotted. The trail was going cold, and she knew it. She flipped to the back, where an older book lay tucked between the pages. It was a leather archive her grandmother had kept, soft with age and stuffed with forest leaves. Aelara had skimmed it before. Today she read it slowly. A faded line near the spine named a moss-covered stone library where old scholars still gathered. She shut both books and grabbed her coat. She had no other thread left to pull. The library stood half-swallowed by ivy, its shelves carved into living oaks. Aelara asked the keeper for anyone who remembered Owl Shift. The keeper went still. Then she pointed to a back room, where an old man sat copying runes. He looked up at the name and nodded once. "I knew it as a child," he said. Aelara sat down across from him. Her hands were shaking. She had a witness at last. But the old man's eyes were tired, and his voice was thin, and she understood that memory alone would not be enough either.

Chapter 3

Aelara stayed with the old man through the afternoon. His desk was a cluttered nest of papers, ink bottles, and small carved foxes. He spoke in pieces. A bell at dawn. A queen's name half-remembered. A gate he once walked through as a boy. She pulled out her grandmother's leather journal and tried to match his fragments to its pressed pages. Nothing lined up. His memory was like a cracked clay pot she had once seen, chunks missing, moss filling the gaps. She could hold it, but nothing she poured in would stay. "Tell me about the gate," she said. He closed his eyes. Heavy planks, he murmured. Iron hinges. A lock no child could lift. Then he stopped. He could not say where it stood, or who guarded it, or what lay beyond. Aelara set her pen down. She had come for a witness who could open the door for her claim. Instead she had found the door itself, locked, with no key in the old man's shaking hands. His story would not stand. No council would hear it. No court would bend. She closed the journal. "Thank you," she said, and meant it, and left him among his foxes and ink. Walking out, she understood the next step plainly. If the witness could not carry the proof, she would have to find the proof that carried itself. Somewhere, a record existed. She would hunt it down.

Chapter 4

Aelara left the old man's room with one thought clear in her head. Records. Something written. Something that could not forget itself the way a person could. She returned to her shop and dragged out her worn leather satchel, the one with torn pockets stuffed full of scribbled location notes. She spread the slips across the counter. Every place she had once marked as promising was already crossed out. She sat with the empty list a long time. Then she remembered something the old man had mumbled between fox carvings. A scribe's post at the edge of the woods. A place where travelers' names were once logged before passing through. She set out at first light. The post was not hard to find, only forgotten. Stone walls half-fallen. Rusted filing cabinets gaped open, their drawers spilling moss and rot onto the floor. Aelara knelt in the muck and pulled drawer after drawer. Empty. Empty. Chewed paper. Empty. Above her, a corroded birdcage swung from a cracked beam. She almost left. Then she noticed a slip of parchment wedged between its bars, folded small, kept dry by the metal dome. She pried it loose with shaking fingers. The ink was faded but readable. A ledger entry. A name. A date. And beside it, three plain words: bound for Owl Shift. Aelara folded the slip into her satchel and stood. The archive was dead. But the trail was not. Somewhere, a full ledger had once held this page. She knew now it had existed. She would find where the rest had gone.
