Chapter 1

Dr. Peter Venkmon unlocked the door to his small Manhattan office and stepped inside. The cramped space held two metal desks, a filing cabinet, and shelves lined with detection equipment. He wanted to build something bigger—a real headquarters that would pull in serious clients willing to pay top dollar for paranormal investigations. Right now, he survived on small jobs: apartments with cold spots, businesses hearing footsteps after hours. The work paid rent, nothing more. He dropped his keys on the desk and stared at the wall where he'd taped newspaper clippings about unexplained phenomena across the city. Somewhere out there, cases existed that could change everything. He just had to find them first. The phone rang at noon. A lawyer's voice explained the situation—a client needed someone to inspect a Victorian mansion before finalizing a sale. Reports of strange sounds had surfaced. Peter grabbed his PKE meter and notebook, then headed out. Twenty minutes later, he stood at the base of ornate marble steps. Wrought iron railings curved upward toward massive wooden doors. Turrets rose above the roofline, casting shadows across the street. Peter climbed the steps slowly. His meter stayed quiet. Inside, he found high ceilings, empty rooms, and dust-covered floors. No electromagnetic disturbances. No ectoplasmic residue. Just old pipes and settling wood. But walking through those grand halls, Peter saw something else entirely. This wasn't just another inspection job. This was exactly what he needed—a building that could house proper equipment, multiple investigation teams, client meeting rooms. A headquarters that looked like it meant business. He needed to find a way to make it his. Back at his office, Peter opened his notebook and sketched floor plans. The mansion could work, but first he needed cases that paid real money. He pulled out his latest project—a device he'd built from a speaker mounted on wheels, connected to a modified stethoscope. The Phantom Listener, he called it. The contraption was designed to pick up electromagnetic interference that standard meters missed. If ghosts communicated through airwaves, this might catch them. He'd test it at the next hotspot he investigated. Peter looked at the mansion's address written in his notes. That building represented everything he wanted. A place where serious paranormal research could happen. A base that would make clients believe he was worth their money. He just had to prove himself first, one case at a time, until he could afford to make that Victorian mansion his headquarters. Peter locked his office and walked three blocks to meet with an advertising company. He needed clients to find him if he wanted bigger cases. The sales agent showed him options—newspaper ads, radio spots, flyers. Then Peter saw it through the window: a massive billboard frame across the street. The agent explained the cost. Peter calculated his savings. It would take most of what he had, but a billboard with bold lettering and his number could reach thousands of people daily. He signed the contract. Two weeks later, the billboard went up with bright colors and a simple message advertising his ghostbusting services. Peter stood on the sidewalk and stared up at it. The Phantom Listener sat ready in his office. The Victorian mansion waited for the right moment. Now people across Manhattan would know who to call when things went wrong. His real headquarters was still out of reach, but he'd taken the first real step toward making it happen.
