Chapter 1

Carmilla de Styria came to Dracula's court with nothing. She wanted a clan of her own in Styria, one to eclipse every rival house. But a clan needs blood, gold, and loyal nobles. She had none of these here. She was a beautiful stranger among strangers, and Dracula did not yet know her name. So she went where the court kept its secrets. The great library rose against the night, a black stronghold of domes and spires, its windows glowing amber. Bat-winged gargoyles watched her climb the steps. Inside, the shelves stretched higher than a cathedral. She did not want a book. She wanted the man who kept them. She found him bent over a table of glass and copper. Ali Gamal, Dracula's inventor and historian. He had built every weapon and machine the court relied on. Dracula had turned him for his mind, not his blood. Now he worked alone, chasing a cure for sunlight, ignored by the nobles who used his tools. His almond-brown hands moved fast over a broken device. He did not look up. "You've soldered that joint three times," Carmilla said. "It keeps failing because the coil runs too hot." Ali's red eyes rose. He studied her the way he studied his machines. "You read Byzantine schematics?" "I read the man who drew them." She circled the table and let her fingers trail the cold copper. "They waste you here. You make miracles, and they treat you like a servant. I know how that feels." He set down his tool. For a long moment he said nothing. Then, quietly, "What do you want, Countess?" So he knew her name after all. Good. "I want what you want. To matter. Dracula listens to no one, but he cannot ignore the vampire who ends his fear of the sun." She leaned close. "You have the mind. You lack the ear of the court. I can win you that ear. Nobles, funding, an audience with Dracula himself. In exchange, you speak my name to him first." Ali laughed once, dry. "Everyone here trades. Few keep their word." "Then test me." She held his gaze. "Give me your failing prototype. I'll bring you a patron by the next moon." He hesitated. She saw the loneliness in him, the years of being overlooked. She had spent her whole long life reading that hunger in others. She waited, and she let him decide. Ali lifted the device and placed it in her hands. "One patron. Prove it." Carmilla smiled. The metal was cold and heavy, and it was hers now. She had her first ally in Dracula's court, and through him a door to its nobles and its gold. The foothold she needed had opened. But Ali's eyes lingered on her as she turned to go, softer than a partner's should. She had meant to use him. She had not meant for him to look at her like that.

Chapter 2

Carmilla left the library with Ali's prototype under her arm. For three nights she worked the court. She flattered old barons and traded whispers with their wives. She spoke Ali's name in the right ears and watched interest catch. But on the fourth night she felt eyes on her. Someone had been counting her steps. She found the watcher waiting in a reading alcove of the great library. A woman in a sharp black suit sat with one leg crossed, a ledger open on her knee. She did not rise. "You've met eleven nobles in three nights, Countess," she said. "You promise them a cure for the sun. I keep a list of everyone who makes promises here." This was Alexis Tomar, Dracula's spymaster. Carmilla had heard the name. Alexis fed her master every secret in the court, and a word from her could end a scheme before it breathed. Carmilla's plan hung on staying invisible until she was too strong to crush. Now the most dangerous woman in Walachia had her name in a book. Carmilla did not flinch. She sat down across from her, close, uninvited. "Then write mine carefully," she said. "You'll want it right when it matters." Alexis's red eyes moved over her face. Carmilla let them. She leaned in and lowered her voice. "You watch everyone. That must be lonely work. No one thanks the woman who keeps them safe." She saw the flicker. A hunter who was never hunted, never seen. "I see you, Alexis." Alexis closed the ledger. "Flattery is a tool. I sell it too." "It isn't flattery when it's true." Carmilla reached out and touched the back of the woman's hand. Cold skin, still. "Report me. Or use me. A stranger moving among fools can learn things you can't. I'll bring you what they hide from you. In return, you leave my name out of your master's ear." Alexis studied the offered hand. For a long moment she said nothing. Then her fingers turned and closed around Carmilla's. "One name a week," she said. "Something real. The first lie, and I take you to Dracula myself." "Agreed." Carmilla held the grip a breath longer than the bargain needed. Alexis stood and gathered her ledger. At the alcove's edge she paused. "Ali Gamal's device," she said. "You should know it never worked. He's been chasing that cure for a decade." She left without waiting for an answer. Carmilla sat alone under the glowing dome. She had turned the spymaster from a threat into a shield. Her name would stay hidden. But the price was a weekly secret she did not yet have, and a new question pressed at her. If Ali's prototype was worthless, then the patron she had promised him bought her nothing. She had traded one danger for a debt she could not pay.

Chapter 3

Carmilla owed a secret and had nothing to sell. Alexis wanted a name by week's end. So Carmilla left the court and hunted for one in the city. She walked the cobblestone road, past a grand market building carved with saints and stone flowers. A pair of vampires strolled ahead in leather and black lace, whispering. She followed them into a bar beneath the shops and listened. She heard gossip, nothing worth trading. Then she saw Alexis at the counter, alone. This was a mistake. The spymaster should not find her fishing. But Carmilla did not run. She sat beside her and smiled. "You drink alone." "I think alone," Alexis said. She did not look up. Three vampires argued near the door, loud and drunk. Alexis ignored them. Her hand curled tight around her glass. Something had cracked in her tonight. Carmilla leaned close and let her voice go soft. "You look like a woman carrying a weight. Tell me. Maybe I can lift it." Alexis was quiet a long time. "My brother," she said finally. "Tyler. Dracula made him a familiar. He suffers every day and I can't free him." Her words came slow and low. "I became this to save him. Now I can't undo it." Carmilla knew her opening. Seduction was a tool. She should promise a cure, hook the spymaster, own her. She had heard whispers of witches who broke bindings. She opened her mouth to lie. But Alexis lifted her eyes. Red, wet, tired. Not the hunter. Just a sister. And something turned in Carmilla she did not plan. She wanted, for once, to give the woman something true. "There may be a way," Carmilla said. Her voice caught. "A Strigoi Vii witch. They can unmake curses. I could find one who owes me." This was half true. She knew the name of such a witch. She did not know if the witch would help. But she wanted it to be real. That frightened her more than Dracula did. Alexis studied her face. "Why would you do this?" "Call it a gift," Carmilla said. "No trade." Alexis set down her glass. For the first time she looked at Carmilla like a person, not a threat. "Then you owe me nothing this week," she said. "Bring me the witch instead. That's worth more than a name." Carmilla nodded. The debt was gone. She had turned an empty bargain into something better, a promise the spymaster would wait for. But her plan had slipped. She had meant to trap Alexis. Instead she had bound herself to help her. Outside, Carmilla stood on the mosaic road and breathed the night. She had bought time and Alexis's trust. Now she had to find a witch who could break Dracula's own magic. And she had to do it before Alexis learned the truth. Worse, she was no longer sure she was lying to win. She was starting to care whether Alexis was free.

Chapter 4

Carmilla had promised Alexis a curse-breaking witch. She knew only one name that fit: the Mother, Queen of the Strigoi Vii. But the Mother sat at the head of Dracula's council, guarded and unreachable. Carmilla had never met her. Still, a promise made was a debt owed. So when a royal summons arrived, she folded her fear and walked into Castle Dracul. Two sentinels flanked the throne room door. Their black armor bore silver crosses, and long spears crossed to bar her path. They studied her red eyes, then let her pass. Inside, four elite vampires in lace and leather turned to watch her walk. Their whispers stopped. Carmilla felt every gaze as she crossed to the great stone throne. Dracula sat there, gold dragon on his chest, red cape pooled like blood. Beside him stood the Mother. Her white gown shimmered. Her veil ran out the doors and down the halls, three miles of it. She looked fifty and ageless at once. Carmilla knew this was the one who could pull a stake from a heart, the only witch who broke bindings. "You have moved through my court like smoke," Dracula said. "Ali Gamal speaks your name. So does Dawit. So does my spymaster, Alexis." His voice never rose. "They all bend toward you. That is a rare gift, Countess." Carmilla bowed. "I only offer them what they want, my king." "What do you want?" the Mother asked. She did not blink. Carmilla weighed a lie. She discarded it. "To free a familiar. Tyler Tomar. Alexis's brother. I told her a Strigoi Vii witch could break his curse." She met the Mother's eyes. "You are that witch." The hall went silent. Dracula's fingers tightened on the throne. The four watching vampires stepped back. The Mother came down one step. "Tyler's binding is tied to Dracula's hunger," she said. "I made it so. Free him, and my husband weakens." She stopped. "I will not." The answer landed like a door slamming. Carmilla's promise to Alexis broke in that moment. No witch would help. No cure existed while Dracula ruled. "Then I ask for nothing," Carmilla said quickly. "Forgive the reach." Dracula raised a hand. "You interest me, Countess. You lie to nobles and tell the truth to a queen." He leaned forward. "Prove your worth. Alexis serves me well. I would keep her loyal. Bring her contentment, and I will grant you standing to build your house in Styria." Carmilla's breath caught. Her arc goal, offered by the king himself. But the price was clear. She could not free Tyler. She could only manage Alexis, keep her quiet, keep her tied. The truth she had chosen to give the spymaster was now a chain she must hide. "I accept," Carmilla said. She left the throne room with a path to her clan and a lie she now had to keep alive.

Chapter 5

Carmilla had a bargain to keep. Dracula wanted Alexis content, and in return he offered her a house in Styria. So she did what she did best. She courted a marriage. Ali Gamal, the court's inventor, had loved her since the library. Carmilla bent that love into a lever. A wedding between them would fix her place inside the court forever. Tonight, in Castle Dracul, that wedding began. Carmilla stood at the altar in a black lace gown stitched with silver. She wore no white. She had ordered a bride's veil in black instead, three miles of it, in honor of the Mother's own. The whole of Walachia had come to drink and watch. Ali took her hand. His eyes shone. He believed she loved him. She did not correct him. The Mother stood to bless the union. She ruled the high council and hid the kingdom from human eyes. She was also the only witch who could break a curse, and she had already refused Carmilla once. Now the queen studied the black veil that mirrored her own. "You copy my mourning," she said. Her voice stayed level. "You wear it for a mother you never met." "I wear it for the one who could grant me a house," Carmilla answered. She would not lie to this queen. She had learned that much. The Mother almost smiled. She raised her hands and spoke the words. Ali and Carmilla were wed. The hall roared. Dracula lifted a goblet to his inventor and his new countess. Three wives watched from the dais. Hanako, the Ice Queen, judged the crowd for traitors. Sofía, who fed only on animals, drank nothing and studied Carmilla with plain suspicion. Then Alexis came through the wedding guests. The spymaster wore her black suit, not celebration clothes. She reached Carmilla and gripped her arm. "You told me a witch could free my brother," she said, low. "Now I hear you knelt to her. And she refused. And you married instead." Carmilla's stomach dropped. The lie she had hidden was out. "Alexis—" "Say it was false," Alexis said. Her red eyes held tears she would not spill. Carmilla could seduce a room. She could not fix this with charm. She chose the truth again. "Tyler cannot be freed while Dracula rules. The Mother tied his curse to the king's hunger. I could not tell you and keep my footing." Alexis let go of her arm. "So you traded my brother for a wedding." She stepped back into the crowd and was gone. The music played on. Ali kissed his bride's cheek, happy, blind. Carmilla now had her marriage and her promised house in Styria. But the spymaster she was ordered to keep content had just walked away as an enemy. Her clan had a foundation. Its first crack had already opened.

Chapter 6

The house in Styria was Carmilla's now, on paper. She had the standing to build it. She had a husband and a title and Dracula's word. What she did not have was a single vampire sworn to her name. A clan of one was no clan at all. So she left the court and went down to the streets of Walachia to find her first followers. The market row ran long and grand, all carved stone and shop fronts. Vampires walked it at night in fine clothes and finer manners. Carmilla studied them the way she once studied nobles. She needed the strong ones. The ambitious ones. The ones with no house to call home. She did not walk alone. Alexis Tomar came with her, in her black suit, hands loose at her sides. Carmilla had not asked her to come. The spymaster had simply appeared at the gate. At the wedding she had named Carmilla an enemy. Now she watched Carmilla work and said nothing. A group of four passed under a lamppost. They wore black leather and silver thread, red eyes bright. Aristocratic. Unsworn. Carmilla stepped into their path and spoke. She did not lie or flatter. She told them the plain truth. "Every house here answers to someone above it. Mine will not. Swear to me, and you rise as I rise." Her gift moved through the words like heat. Three of them knelt on the cobblestones. The fourth followed. Then two more from a doorway. Then a stylish pair who had watched from the shadows. By the third hour, eleven vampires had pledged their blood to the House of Styria. Carmilla had her clan. It breathed now. It stood in the street with red eyes and waited for her command. She turned, flushed with it, and found Alexis close. "You lied to me about my brother," Alexis said. Her voice was low and even. "I came here to watch you fail." "And?" "And you didn't." Alexis looked at the kneeling ranks, then back. "I've hated you for a week. It didn't take." Carmilla went still. Charm was her weapon, and she had none ready. "I don't do this," she said. "Feeling. I never mistake it for anything real." "I know what you are." Alexis stepped closer. "I am the same thing. That's why." Carmilla kissed her. She meant it, which frightened her more than anything the night had held. Alexis kissed her back, hands fisting the black lace. When they broke apart, neither pretended it was strategy. "I love you," Alexis said, quiet and final. "God help us both." "I love you," Carmilla answered, and heard how strange the words sounded in her own mouth. Her clan was born. Its first followers knelt behind her. But she was married to Ali Gamal to keep this very woman content for Dracula. Now she loved her instead. The marriage that anchored her house had just become the thing most likely to break it.
