Chapter 1

Caspian Tidemark pushed his wheelchair through the murky waters of Cryptidia's outer swamps. His tail flicked behind him, propelling him forward through the thick vegetation. He'd heard rumors of an ancient library hidden somewhere in these marshes—scrolls that hadn't seen sunlight in centuries. The water grew deeper as he navigated between twisted cypress roots. His wheels caught on submerged logs twice before he spotted it—a weathered wooden dock jutting out into the dark water. The planks looked old but solid, their rugged surface worn smooth by time. He wheeled onto the dock and tested its strength. It held. This would be his launch point for reaching the deeper parts of the swamp where the texts waited. He pulled a small boat closer with his tail and transferred himself inside. His wheelchair stayed on the dock—he wouldn't need it in the water. Caspian grabbed the oars and pushed off, his heart beating faster. Each stroke brought him closer to his goal. The ancient texts were out there somewhere, crumbling a little more each day. If he didn't find them soon, they'd be lost forever. He had to preserve them before time did its work. The boat cut through the green water as he rowed deeper into Cryptidia's heart.

Chapter 2

Caspian pulled his boat up to a mud bank and climbed out into shallow water. His tail helped him balance as he searched through the reeds. The swamp held secrets, but he needed to learn how to read them first. He spotted strange markings carved into a flat stone half-buried in the silt. The symbols looked ancient, maybe even older than the texts he was searching for. He ran his fingers over the grooves, trying to make sense of the patterns. This was step one—learning to recognize the old language before he could preserve it. Without understanding these marks, he'd never know what was worth saving. He pulled out a small notebook from his vest pocket and sketched the symbols carefully. Each line mattered. Each curve could be important. The water lapped at his scales as he worked, and somewhere deeper in the swamp, the ancient library waited for someone who could finally understand its words. His notebook filled with drawings, but none of it made sense yet. He needed help from someone who already knew this language. Caspian climbed back into his boat and rowed for two hours, following markers he'd spotted on his earlier trips. A small island appeared through the mist. The building there had ivy growing up its walls and large windows that caught the light. Water's Edge Library. He tied his boat to a wooden post and wheeled up the ramp to the door. Inside, books and scrolls filled every shelf. An old woman sat at a desk near the entrance. Caspian showed her his sketches without speaking. She studied them, then nodded. "Ancient Cryptidian script," she said. She pulled thick books from a shelf and set them in front of him. The pages showed his symbols with translations beside them. By the time the sun set, Caspian could read ten basic characters. It wasn't much, but now he had the tools to unlock the texts waiting in the depths.
