Chapter 1

Claire Beamen had three weeks left to finish the mansion, and this morning her hammer was gone again. She stood in the dew-wet grass outside the white Victorian and counted the empty hooks on her shed wall. The shed was her own build, scrap pine and bent nails, a pegboard she had drawn with a marker so every tool had a labeled square. Every square was a promise to herself: no more lost hours, no more hunting. Three squares were empty. The hammer square. The pry bar square. The square for her good chisel. She had bought this house with every dollar she owned. She had bought it alone, signed alone, moved in alone with a duffel bag and a key that stuck in the lock. The plan was simple on paper. Renovate. Sell. Move to a city where the buildings touched and the streetlights stayed on all night. The plan did not account for black mold behind the master bath, or rotted joists under the kitchen, or a tool shed that emptied itself overnight. She walked the yard in work boots, scanning the ground. Yesterday she had found her level on the porch rail. The day before, her tape measure sat on a stump near the willow. She had told herself she was tired. She had told herself she was forgetting. She had stopped believing both excuses around the second week. The path to the old red barn was flattened where she dragged lumber back and forth. Halfway down it, she saw her hammer in the grass, head up, handle pointed at the tree line. She knelt and picked it up. The handle was cold in a way the morning did not explain. Caught on the claw, looped twice around the steel, was a single long strand of black hair. Claire's hair was brown and cut at the chin. She stood slowly. She pulled the hair free and held it up against the gray sky. It was too long to be hers. Too dark. Too clean, like it had been combed. Her hand started to shake before her mind caught up. She turned toward the trees because some part of her already knew to look. Two red eyes watched her from the dark between the trunks. They did not blink. They did not move closer. They held her, steady and patient, the way a thing watches something it has already decided to keep. Claire did not run. She did not scream. She closed her fist around the hammer and the strand of hair and walked backward, one step, then another, until her shoulder hit the shed wall. The eyes stayed where they were. She understood, standing there with her back to her own crooked pegboard, that nothing had been moving her tools. Someone had. And whoever it was had not left.
