Chapter 1

Sophia Gracenote pressed her mittened hands against the frost-covered shop window. Inside, a music box sat on a velvet cushion, its silver gears gleaming under the lamplight. Her breath fogged the glass as she counted the coins in her pocket for the third time. Only eight coppers. The music box cost two silvers. Her mom had hummed the same tune every Yule morning since Sophia could remember. This year would be different. This year, she'd earn enough to buy the perfect gift. She turned away from the shop and walked down the cobbled street. Her boots left small prints in the fresh snow. At the edge of the square, a wooden message board stood covered in white. Papers fluttered against the wood, held by brass tacks. Sophia brushed the snow from the top and leaned close. One notice offered three coppers for delivering firewood. Another needed someone to wrap gifts for five coppers. A third asked for help cleaning a chimney for four coppers. She pulled out a stub of pencil and copied the addresses onto her palm. Twelve coppers from these jobs, plus what she'd earn at her aunt's candle stall, would get her halfway to two silvers. She had ten days until Yule morning. The music box would be her mom's, and this time her mom would cry happy tears. The market stall waited two streets over. Her aunt had promised her three coppers per day to mind the candles and garland while she ran errands. Sophia arrived and ducked under the wooden awning. Snow dusted the counter and clung to the hand-crafted candles arranged in neat rows. A Yule garland hung across the front, its pine needles fresh and green. She brushed the snow away and straightened the display. A woman stopped to buy two candles. Sophia wrapped them in brown paper and pocketed three coppers. Her aunt returned with supplies and pressed another copper into her hand. Four more coins. The music box felt closer now, almost real enough to touch. After her aunt took over the stall, Sophia walked through the market to look at gifts one more time. A wagon sat near the fountain, its wooden sides painted red and green. Snow globes covered every surface, lined up by size. A sandwich board leaned against the wheel with prices written in chalk. The smallest cost five coppers. The largest cost three silvers. Sophia picked up a medium one and shook it gently. Tiny flakes swirled around a little house with a smoking chimney. Her mom would love it, but the music box was what she really wanted. Sophia set the globe down and counted her coins again. Twelve coppers now. She needed eight more to make two silvers. The jobs on the message board would help. She'd start tomorrow at dawn.
