Chapter 1

Ezra Blackwell wanted a dead man's name. The baronetcy had sat empty for two years, and no heir had come forward. Ezra meant to be that heir. He had the forger's parchment ready, blank and waiting. But a forged lineage needs true names to hang its lies on, and those names sat locked inside the family record he could not touch. He was a tenement manager with a gold tooth and a stained coat. No clerk would open that book for a man like him. He stood outside the tenement he ran, the crooked one with soot on its brick and warm light in its windows. In his coat pocket rode the eviction notice for the tenant eleven weeks behind. He had spent the morning learning where the record was kept and who kept it. The answer was a locked archive that only the high families could enter. Ezra had once sat at their tables. A partner's lie in court had thrown him out of those rooms. He wanted them back. "You can't buy your way in." The voice came from the shadow of the doorway. Ezra turned. A tall, gaunt man leaned there, hooded, still as a hanged coat. On his belt hung a dark gold clockwork weapon built to kill without noise. The Whispering Shroud. Ezra knew him the way a man knows a debt. They had traded favors before, quiet ones, the kind neither would name in daylight. "I don't mean to buy," Ezra said. He smiled the smile that had once opened high doors. "I mean to borrow." The Shroud stepped close. He smelled of oil and cold air. "The archive has one clerk. One lock. One book." He paused. "I can open all three." "For what price?" "Later." The word landed flat and final. Ezra should have pressed. A debt with no number was the most dangerous kind. But the names were behind that lock, and the parchment in his coat was worthless without them. He took the deal. That night the Shroud slipped through crowds no one watched. Ezra waited in an alley. Hours passed. Then a hand pushed a rolled page against his chest. Ezra unrolled it under a lamp. The lineage of the dead line lay there in faded ink. Names of fathers. Names of sons. The last of them, childless, dead. Ezra's hands shook. This was the skeleton. Now the forger could dress it in Ezra's own blood. "It's what I needed," Ezra said. The Shroud was already fading into the dark. His answer came without turning. "You'll pay when I say. Not before." Ezra held the names he had wanted. He also held a debt he could not read. The archive would notice the missing page by morning. And the man who could kill without sound now owned a piece of him.
