Chapter 1

Emmett Paige pressed his palm against the archive's door and felt the familiar warmth of the protective seal respond to his touch. Inside, rows of scroll cases lined the shelves, each containing stories too dangerous to speak aloud. He'd spent three years developing his classification system, organizing tales by how quickly they could spread and infect. Some whispered themselves into dreams. Others rewrote reality with a single reading. His mentor had trusted him with this work, and now he carried a bigger dream: a guild of scribes who could preserve these forbidden tales without letting them loose on the world. The seal clicked open, and he stepped inside, already mentally reviewing the day's tasks. The morning light filtered through the high windows as he worked at his desk. He needed scribes who understood what was at stake. The Plague of Empty Pages kept spreading. Seven spontaneous combustions in one week. His hands shook slightly as he pulled out fresh parchment and his strongest binding inks. The enchantment took two hours to complete. Words appeared on the scroll, glowing soft and steady, then fading like mirages in desert heat. Anyone who read his message would see it clearly before it vanished. No permanent record. No trail for those who might misuse the information. He wrote his requirements carefully: discretion, courage, and respect for dangerous knowledge. He rolled the finished scroll and tucked it inside his coat. Outside, he walked until he found what he needed. A palm tree grew alone, its trunk thick and weathered. The roots twisted into the sand, creating a hollow space beneath. Emmett knelt and tested the gap with his hand. Deep enough. Hidden enough. He could use this spot to pass manuscripts to potential guild members. A test of their ability to follow instructions. Anyone who could find this location and retrieve what he left would prove themselves worthy of consideration. The compound waited three streets over, its colored cupolas visible above the low buildings. Emmett stood in the courtyard and looked at the empty rooms. Twelve chambers for scrolls and scribes. A pool at the center, fed by springs that never dried. This would be his guild's home. Here, dangerous tales would rest in cases with thaumic barriers. Here, scribes would learn his classification system and understand narrative virulence. He hung his glowing scroll near the entrance where visitors would see it first. The words shimmered in the shade. His guild would start with one scribe, maybe two. But it would start now, today, with this message calling out to those brave enough to answer.
