Chapter 1

Hanako Tepes wed Dracula to bind two vampire clans into one. Now someone in his court wants that union broken, and Walachia burned with it. She has hunted the traitor for weeks and trusts no one. Tonight she needed one ally, and only one man in this kingdom shared her blood. The blades rang across the Minamoto Arena. Eighty new recruits stood on the tiers, waiting for the Minamoto way to fail. Her uncle Jiro drove her back with his gold-and-silver katana. She met each strike with her own diamond-edged blade. Sparks bit the stone floor. He was a general of Dracula's armies and prince of their clan, and he fought her like she was a stranger. That was mercy. Anything less would have looked staged. They broke apart, even, both still standing. The recruits roared. Jiro lowered his sword. "They believe now," he said. "Good." Hanako wiped her blade. "Clear them out. I need to speak with you." He waved the soldiers off. When the last one left, the arena went quiet. She lifted her golden headdress and set it on the stone. Only then did she face him plainly. "I came for a duel and a warning," she said. "Someone in Dracula's court means to shatter my marriage. If the union breaks, the clans go to war. Ours dies first." Jiro's face did not move. "You have suspects." "Three." She counted them on her fingers. "Alexis Tomar. She runs Dracula's spies and answers to no one but him. Her people move through every court in the world. Perfect cover for a traitor." "Go on." "The countess from Styria. Carmilla. She talks her way into thrones. She wants a clan of her own. Mine would do." Hanako paused. "And the Van Helsing girl. A hunter, in Dracula's castle, with a loaded crossbow. He calls it a truce. I call it a knife at the door." Jiro stood still a long moment. "You could take these to Dracula." "Dracula loves his court too much. He would warn them." She stepped closer. "You are my blood, uncle. I need one person who will not sell me to the highest chair. Is that you?" He looked at the empty tiers, then at her. Something worked behind his eyes. He owed Dracula his sword. He owed her his family. "I serve Dracula," Jiro said at last. "But the Minamoto come before Dracula. And you are Minamoto." He picked up her headdress and handed it back. "I am with you. Tell no one else." Hanako took the crown. Relief cut through her, sharp and brief. "Then we start with the spymaster." "No," Jiro said. "Alexis Tomar already knows you watch her. My couriers told me tonight. She has asked to meet you. Alone." The relief drained cold. Hanako had her ally at last. She also had a meeting she never called, with the one suspect who now hunted her back.

Chapter 2

The spymaster chose the arena for their meeting. Hanako came anyway. Empty now, the tiers loomed dark above the training floor. Alexis Tomar waited near the center, in a black suit, hands loose at her sides. Dracula's spymaster ran his eyes across every court in the world. If anyone had planted the knife in Hanako's marriage, this woman could have. Hanako kept her diamond-edged blade sheathed and stopped ten steps away. "You watch me," Alexis said. No greeting. "I want to know why before you do something we both regret." "Someone in this court wants my marriage broken." Hanako watched her face. "You move through every throne. You answer to no one. Convince me it isn't you." Alexis did not flinch. She reached slowly into her coat. Hanako's hand went to her hilt. But Alexis pulled out a folded paper and tossed it to the floor between them. Then she dragged something from the shadows behind her. A dead vampire in a courier's cloak, throat torn open. "A Nordic courier," Alexis said. "I killed him three nights ago. His orders name his contact inside your rites." She nudged the paper forward. "Read the name." Hanako did not move for it. A trap could look exactly like this. "You could have written that yourself." "I could have." Alexis stepped closer. "But I hunt the same traitor you do. I found him first. Your steward. The Nordic Clan placed him inside your marriage." The steward. Her own man, at her side through every ceremony. Rage rose in Hanako, cold and clean. Something new answered it. Her red eyes flared white. Frost bloomed across the stone under her boots. The air turned bitter. She had never felt this before. Alexis stepped back fast. "What is that?" Hanako drew her blade. It came out sheathed in ice, the edge sharper than diamond. She was not aiming at Alexis. The proof was real. The courier was real. This woman had done what she claimed. Hanako lowered the frost-covered sword. A shape dropped from the dark tiers. Pale skin, black wings, fangs bared. A strigoi mort, the steward's last defense, sent to silence them both. It dove at Alexis's back. Hanako threw out her hand. Ice erupted from the floor in a jagged wall, a wave of blue crystal rising like a small mountain. The creature slammed into it. Hanako swung her frozen blade. The strigoi mort shattered into snow and dust. Silence returned. Frost coated the whole training floor. Alexis stared at her, then at the melting ice. "They will call you the ice queen for this." Hanako sheathed her blade. "Let them." She looked down at the courier's orders, now certain. "You are not the traitor. My steward is. And he knows we know." She had her proof and a new gift. She had also lost the element of surprise. The spy inside her marriage was warned, and he would run tonight.

The steward ran, as Hanako knew he would. Her guards cornered him inside the rune-carved tower before dawn. Now he knelt on the cold stone, wrists chained, a spear held at his throat by a masked sentinel in black Byzantine armor. Hanako wanted names. Who else served the Nordic Clan? But when she looked at the man who had smiled through her wedding rites, rage rose in her chest. Frost cracked across the floor. Her eyes flared white. The steward screamed as ice climbed his legs. The guard beside her staggered back from the killing cold. She would freeze them all before she got a single word. "Stop." The voice cut the room. The Mother stood in the doorway, her white veil trailing far behind into the dark. She was Dracula's first wife and Hanako's own kin, the witch queen who hid all of Walachia from human eyes. She looked at the frozen steward, then at Hanako's shaking hands. She did not flinch at the cold. She walked into it. "Your power comes from the Strigoi Vii blood in your line," the Mother said. "Old witch blood. It answers your fury, not your will." She touched the frost on the wall. It did not melt, but it did not spread to her. "You feel rage. The ice feeds. That is why it grows." "Then teach me to stop it," Hanako said. The steward's teeth chattered. His legs had gone blue. "You cannot stop the rage. You are not built to." The Mother stepped closer. "So do not fight it. Aim it. Choose one thing to freeze. Hold that thing in your mind. Nothing else." Hanako breathed. She pictured the chains on the steward's wrists. Only the chains. Not the man. Not the guard. Not the walls. Cold gathered in her palm. She pointed one finger. Ice sheeted over the iron links and stopped there. The frost on the floor pulled back toward her, like water down a drain. The guard lowered his spear. The steward gasped, alive, thawing. "Again," the Mother said. Hanako froze the lock on the door. Then a single stone. Each time, she held one target and let the rest of the room stay warm. The power obeyed. She turned to the steward. Her eyes cooled from white to red. "Now you can question him," the Mother said. "Without burying him in a mountain of ice." She turned to leave, veil dragging behind her. "The blood is yours. So is the blame if you lose it again." Hanako knelt before the steward. She set one cold hand on his shoulder. He felt the frost and did not doubt she could end him. "Every name," she said. "Slowly." He talked. He gave her a courier route and a meeting place three nights out. A cell of the Nordic Clan waited there, deep in the mountains. Hanako rose. She had command of her power now, and a new trail to follow.

Chapter 4

Two nights before the mountain meeting, Hanako climbed to the training arena where her uncle waited. She could freeze one target now. But the courier cell held five men, maybe more. If her rage slipped for a breath, she would kill every witness she needed alive. She needed to hold the cold wide and steady, not narrow. She needed Jiro. Jiro Minamoto did not greet her. He stood at the center of the arena floor, his gold-and-silver katana already drawn, watching her hands. He was the General of Dracula's armies and the man who had trained her to fight before she could speak full sentences. He trained by repetition, until the body struck before the mind spoke. "Show me," he said. Hanako drew her own diamond-edged blade. She pointed at a wooden post. Ice sheeted over it and stopped. "One thing," she said. "The Mother taught me that." "One thing is not enough for five men," Jiro said. He set his sword down. "Your power is not just witch blood. It is older. It has a name." She lowered the blade. "What name?" "Kuraokami. Dragon of snow and rain. Our clan prayed to him before the hunters drove us from Japan." He walked to the balcony overlooking the whole valley of Walachia. "The Mother taught you to aim a knife. I will teach you to open a storm. A storm does not choose. It covers all and spares what you decide." "That is the opposite of control," Hanako said. "No." He pointed at the city below, the towers and rooftops and river. "Do not hold one target. Hold the whole thing at once. Feel every roof. Then pull the cold back from the ones you choose." Hanako gripped the railing. Rage rose, the same fury that always fed the ice. She did not narrow it this time. She let it spread. Cold poured off her skin and rolled down the mountain. Clouds boiled overhead. Snow fell in sheets. Within minutes frost climbed every wall, every spruce, every cobblestone. All of Walachia went white. "Now," Jiro said. "The arena below us. Full of my recruits. Spare them." Hanako's chest clenched. She pictured the warriors inside the halls beneath her. She pulled the cold back from them alone, an island of warmth in a frozen kingdom. The storm held everywhere else. Her eyes burned white, then steadied. She let the storm die. Snow stopped. Ice thawed under her will. Below, eighty of Jiro's soldiers walked out unharmed while the rest of the city dripped. Jiro picked up his katana. "Now you can walk into five men and choose which four live." Hanako sheathed her blade. Her hands did not shake. She could hold the cold wide and pick her survivors. But the storm had covered all of Walachia. Every clan had seen it. By dawn, whoever the traitor was would know exactly what she had become.

Chapter 5

By dawn, the whole city had thawed, but the story of the frozen queen had not. Vampire citizens crowded the castle steps with complaints. Their shops had iced over. Their gardens lay dead. Whispers ran through the streets faster than Hanako could walk them. She heard her name shift from wife to witch to threat. Before she could reach Dracula and explain herself, he summoned her. The trial would happen in his hall, in front of the full court. Hanako entered Castle Dracul with her veil dragging behind her. Three vampires in sleek black suits stopped their talk and stared as she passed. Dracula sat on his black stone throne, red velvet spilling down the stairs at his feet. Renfield stood beside him with a goblet, his mohawk drooping, his thin frame hunched. He looked at her once, then away. The Mother sat at Dracula's right hand, veil pooled around her like fog. "The city says you froze it," Dracula said. His voice was flat and final. "Explain." Hanako did not kneel. "I found the traitor in your court. I trained to stop his allies without killing the witnesses. The frost was the cost of that training. I did it to protect this marriage, not to break it." "You did it in the sky over every clan," Dracula said. "Now they fear my wife more than they fear me." Hanako raised her hand. She let the cold rise, controlled now. Frost climbed her fingers and formed a blade of clear ice. She held it steady, then let it melt to water in her palm. "This is not a threat to you," she said. "It is a weapon for you." The Mother stood. Her chair scraped stone. Every vampire in the hall went still. She stepped down toward Hanako and studied the wet on her hand. "That is not vampire cold," the Mother said. "That is witch blood." Her blue eyes narrowed. "I have hidden this city for centuries. I know every witch line alive. I did not know yours." "Neither did I," Hanako said. The Mother turned to Dracula. "She is no Strigoi Vii. But the blood in her is real." She faced Hanako again. "You froze a kingdom and spared who you chose. Untrained. My coven took years to do less." Dracula leaned forward. "Then she is not a criminal." "No," the Mother said. "She is an asset." She held out her pale hand to Hanako. "Join my coven. Learn what your blood truly is. Under my roof, no one calls you traitor." Hanako looked at the offered hand. An hour ago she faced execution. Now the most feared witch in Walachia claimed her as kin. She took the hand. The court settled. The trial was over. But the Mother's grip was cold and certain, and Hanako understood she had traded one watcher for another. The traitor still ran free. And now the Mother would be watching her hunt.

Chapter 6

The Mother's coven watched Hanako now, not the traitor. Her freezing display had warned the very vampire she hunted. Somewhere among the witches and warriors, the spy stayed hidden. So Hanako stopped hunting in secret. She would draw the traitor out by force. She sent word that she would train her ice against a real opponent in the arena at midnight, in full view of the court. Whoever the traitor was, they would come to see how strong the Ice Queen had grown. Her uncle met her at the arena doors. Jiro Minamoto carried his katana across both palms, his topknot pinned tight for the night. He spoke plainly, the way he always did. "You cannot bait a snake with a show. You will only frighten it deeper." "Then I will freeze the whole nest," Hanako said. "Frost spreads. Whoever flinches wrong, I mark." Jiro studied her. "You will need someone who can push you past holding back." He looked past her shoulder. The torches dimmed. Every guard along the wall stiffened. Hanako felt her own heartbeat stumble off its rhythm before she turned. Her stepdaughter walked onto the sand in red. The Crimson Prințesă, Maria, Dracula's daughter and the first blood bender, moved like she owned the floor. Nearby heartbeats leaned toward her without permission. "Uncle says you hold back," Maria said. "So I will bleed you until you stop." Hanako raised her hand. Frost climbed her arm and hardened into a blade of clear ice. "I will not hurt you, Maria." "Then you will lose." Maria flicked two fingers. The blood of a dead beast rose from a jar at the arena's edge. It shot at Hanako like a red spear. She caught it on her ice and the two burst apart. Blood froze midair and rained down as red hail. Hanako slid back, boots carving the sand. Maria pressed. She pulled blood from every crack in the stone, whips of it lashing. Each time Hanako iced a strike, she pulled the cold back short. She feared a wide freeze would catch Maria's heart. Blood splattered the walls. Ice cracked the floor. But Hanako gave ground, and the watching court saw her retreat. "You freeze the air but not me," Maria snarled. "Coward." Hanako's rage broke loose. She stopped guarding Maria. She spread frost across the whole arena at once, then yanked it back from one small circle around her stepdaughter, exactly as Jiro had taught. The sand froze solid. The blood froze. And in the far seats, one figure leapt for the exit as ice sealed the doors. Hanako's frost caught the runner's legs. The court gasped. A witch of the Mother's own coven lay pinned in ice, a Nordic dagger sliding from her sleeve. Maria lowered her hand, breathing hard. "There is your snake." Hanako had her traitor. But the woman wore the Mother's mark. Exposing her meant accusing the Mother's own coven, the only house now shielding Hanako in Walachia.

Chapter 7

The witch lay frozen in the arena sand, a Nordic dagger at her feet. The court cheered the Ice Queen. But Hanako stood over the pinned woman and felt no relief. Maria wiped blood from her hands and studied her stepmother. "You caught your snake," Maria said. "So why does your face say otherwise?" Hanako knelt. She pressed one cold finger to the witch's cheek and asked one question. "Who sent you?" The witch spat and laughed through frozen lips. "A trained hand," the witch said. "I only carried the blade for the one who never touches it herself." Then the witch's eyes rolled white. Her heart burst inside her chest. Blood froze in the air above her. Someone had reached into the arena and killed their own agent before she could name a master. Maria felt it too. "That was blood work. Fine work. Not mine." She scanned the seats. "Only a few in Walachia can pull a heart from across a room." Hanako rose. She understood then. The steward, the couriers, this dying witch — all of it was noise. A cheap distraction thrown to keep her chasing shadows. The real traitor had come to Dracula's court wrapped in silk, welcomed at the door. High in the seats, one figure did not cheer. Carmilla de Styria sat still in her black lace, silver thread catching the torchlight. She had arrived in Walachia as a guest, a countess charming her way toward a throne of her own. Now she watched Hanako with the calm of a woman watching a play she had already read. Hanako climbed the arena steps toward her. Two of Dracula's royal guards moved to block the aisle, spears crossing, black capes shifting over their armored shoulders. Carmilla lifted one long-nailed finger. The guards stepped back. That alone told Hanako everything. The guards obeyed a guest before their own queen. "You killed her," Hanako said. "She was spent." Carmilla did not rise. "You spent months freezing stewards and couriers. Small hands. I sent them so you would look down and not up." She smiled without warmth. "You are looking up now." Frost climbed Hanako's arm. The seats around them iced over. Vampires scrambled from their benches. But Carmilla only tilted her head, and Hanako felt her own rage cool against her will, her voice softening in her throat before she chose it. "You cannot freeze what the court already loves," Carmilla said. "Half of Walachia would bleed for me by spring. Accuse me, and they defend me. You have no proof but a dead witch." She stood at last, gown pooling like ink. "Go home, Ice Queen." Hanako let the frost fall from her arm. Carmilla was right. She had no proof, no allies she could trust, and a court already turning. She walked back down the steps. She had her traitor's name at last. And she had never been further from stopping her.

Hanako walked home from the arena with a name and no proof. Carmilla had killed her own witch to keep the trail clean. Every operative Hanako caught died before speaking. She needed a way past the dead mouths. So she went to the one person in Walachia who could read the blood itself. She found Maria in the castle's lower hall, cleaning a red-stained blade. Dracula's daughter did not look up. "You want something. You never visit me otherwise." "You said only a few can pull a heart across a room," Hanako said. "You called it fine work. If you can feel who cast it, you can name my traitor." Maria set the blade down. "Blood carries a signature. Like a hand carries a grip. I can read the one who bent that witch's heart." She looked at Hanako at last. "But the corpse is frozen and days gone. I need fresh work. A living sample of her craft." That was the trap inside the answer. Hanako could not get close to Carmilla. So she baited a smaller one. She let it be known she had found a scroll naming Carmilla's operatives. Within a night, a courier came to steal it. The Midnight Pair caught him on the market row for coin, a stylish vampire man and his sharp-nailed partner, and dragged him to the castle. Hanako pressed the courier for a name. His eyes rolled white. His heart burst in his chest, exactly as the witch's had. Blood misted the air. Carmilla had reached across the city and killed him mid-word. "Now," Maria said. She spread her hands over the fresh corpse. The blood in the air stopped falling. It hung, then spun, pulled by her will. "There. A river by its throat." Her eyes narrowed. She held the dead man's blood and traced the force that had killed him back along its own path. "I have her," Maria said. "The signature is a woman's. Cold. Practiced. She stood behind the killing, not inside it." She turned to Hanako. "The blood remembers her hand. Carmilla de Styria. I would name it before the whole court." Hanako's frost cracked across the stone floor. At last she had a witness the court could not wave away. Not a dead pawn. Dracula's own daughter, the blood bender, ready to testify. But the killing had told Carmilla something too. She now knew Hanako had learned to read her work. The shadows were spent. There would be no more small hands sent to mislead. Maria wiped her palms clean. "She knows you can see her now. A cornered thing does not hide. It strikes." Hanako looked at the frozen blood on the floor. She finally had proof. And she had just made Carmilla stop playing games.
