Chapter 1

Mira slipped past the dining hall before breakfast, the stolen color pressing cold against her ankle inside her boot. She needed somewhere hidden, somewhere she could actually see what this thing was — this feeling that burned like ice and tasted like impossible homesickness. Maybe it was the key. Maybe this was how the legendary pigment worked, emotions pulled straight out of paintings and sorted like ingredients. The old sauna sat beyond the practice yards, half-buried in snow drifts that hadn't been cleared in months. No one used it anymore — the stove had cracked two winters ago and no one bothered fixing it. Perfect. Mira kicked the door open and slipped inside, her breath fogging in the dim light filtering through frost-covered windows. She pulled the color sample from her boot and held it up. The thing writhed in her palm like liquid glass, throwing shadows that moved against the light. She needed to contain it properly before it burned through her skin. On a dusty shelf, tucHalogens are added to pools to kill Bacteria. In too low a concentration they won't kill the bacteria efficiently, too high and they will irritate skin and eyes. For safe swimming the concentration should be between 1 ppm (part per million) and 2 ppm. If you find the concentration to be 3.2 ppm of chlorine, how much water should you add to 10,000 liters of this pool water to lower it to 2.0 ppm? To lower the chlorine concentration from To find the final volume needed for Cross-multiplying gives: Thus, the final volume of the pool should be To find out how much water to add: Therefore, you need to add approximately 6,000 liters of water to lower the chlorine concentration to By signing up, you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy To lower the chlorine concentration from 3.2 ppm to 2.0 ppm in a pool containing 10,000 liters of water, you need to dilute the solution. The formula to calculate the volume of water needed to achieve the desired concentration is: [ V_1 imes C_1 = V_2 imes C_2 ] Where: - ( V_1 ) is the initial volume of the pool water (10,000 liters) - ( C_1 ) is the initial concentration of chlorine (3.2 ppm) - ( V_2 ) is the final volume of water needed to achieve the desired concentration - ( C_2 ) is the desired concentration of chlorine (2.0 ppm) Rearrange the formula to solve for ( V_2 ): [ V_2 = rac{{V_1 imes C_1}}{{C_2}} ] Substitute the given values: [ V_2 = rac{{10,000 , ext{liters} imes 3.2 , ext{ppm}}}{{2.0 , ext{ppm}}} ] [ V_2 = rac{{32,000}}{{2}} ] [ V_2 = 16,000 , ext{liters} ] So, you need to add 16,000 liters of water to the pool to lower the chlorine concentration from 3.2 ppm to 2.0 ppm. Chapter 2

Mira grabbed the first thing that looked like it would hold liquid — a frosted glass vial wedged between two canvas stretchers. She tipped the color sample toward it. The thing slid off her palm like oil, pooling at the bottom of the vial with a soft hiss. The door opened behind her. Mira spun, shoving the vial behind her back as steam rolled in from the entrance. Through the white mist, she saw Dame Crystalline step inside, her left hand already flexing — open, closed, open — the crescent scar catching the dim light. The woman carried a bundle of herb-stained cloth under her other arm, heading toward the far bench like she did this every morning. She hadn't seen Mira yet. The steam was too thick. Mira slid toward the stone vent in the corner where more steam billowed up from the hot springs below. She could drop the vial into the mist, hide it in the rocks, come back later. But Dame Crystalline's gaze swept the room, landing on the shelf where Mira had been standing — where the canvas stretchers now sat askew. Her mentor's eyes narrowed. "Someone's been in here." The words weren't a question. "Just me," Mira said, stepping out before her mentor could come closer to the shelf. She kept the vial pressed against her spine, praying the steam and shadows would hide it. "I needed somewhere quiet to think. Astral's still mad at me." Dame Crystalline studied her for three long seconds, then nodded and unwrapped the cloth bundle, revealing a wooden box carved with runes. Inside: six more vials, each filled with stolen colors that moved like Mira's sample. Her mentor had brought them here. To the warmth. To keep them liquid. Mira's throat went dry as Dame Crystalline finally spoke: "Good. Then you can help me sort these properly."

Chapter 3

Mira forced herself to breathe slowly while Dame Crystalline arranged the vials on the stone bench. Six stolen colors, each one moving like trapped lightning inside frosted glass. Her mentor's crescent-scarred hand hovered over them, fingers flexing in that familiar pattern. The door slammed open. Astral stood there holding something flat against her chest, her face flushed from running. "Mira. Outside. Now." She didn't wait for an answer, just turned and left. Dame Crystalline looked up sharply, but Mira was already moving, the vial in her boot pressing cold against her ankle with each step. Astral had set up in the practice yard, a chart propped against the stone wall. Two crescent scars carved in frost, side by side. One labeled with Dame Crystalline's name. The other labeled Master Cornelius. Next to the chart sat a bone knife with a notch in the handle that matched the second scar perfectly. "I checked the records," Astral said, her voice tight. "Cornelius cut himself forty years ago in the burned studio. The same night Wintergale nearly killed three people. Everyone saw it happen." She pulled Mira closer to the chart. "Look at the curves. Dame Crystalline's scar bends left. The one you saw in the East Tower bends right. Like Cornelius's." Mira stared at the chart, then at the knife, then back at Dame Crystalline's studio where rainbow light spilled from the frosted windows. All those vials she'd been sorting. All that time spent helping her mentor organize stolen colors. For nothing. For the wrong person. The cold in her boot felt different now — not like evidence, but like proof she'd been looking at everything backwards. "We need to tell her," Mira said, but her voice came out hollow because she already knew what Astral would say. What she'd have to do next. Stop sorting colors for Dame Crystalline and start watching Cornelius instead.
