Chapter 1

Pennywise had nowhere to hide before the blood moon. The town gave him fear, but no nest beneath it. Each hunt left him exposed under streetlights and open windows. He needed a place to gather terror until every resident ran or broke. His red balloon scraped along the frozen ground as he found an empty lot. He drove both hands into the hard soil. The earth split beneath his shoes. From the crack rose a circus tent, striped red and white, its ropes pulling tight without wind. A carousel burst from the ground beside it. Painted horses began to turn. Bright music spilled into the cold night. Marilyne Monroe heard the calliope from inside a nearby building. She had escaped one killer already. Now she stood at the doorway, clutching a coat around herself. “No,” she whispered. “I’m not going in there.” Pennywise stepped from the tent flap with his wide smile fixed in place. “Every show needs its first guest.” He lifted one finger. The balloon floated toward Marilyne. She backed away. Then Art Terrifier came from behind the carousel. He said nothing. His black-and-white face held a hungry grin. He placed a ticket in the snow at Marilyne’s feet. Marilyne ran. The carousel sped up. Three children appeared on the spinning horses, screaming and reaching for the railing. Their cries cut through the music. Marilyne stopped. She stared at them, then at Pennywise. “Let them go,” she said. Pennywise’s smile widened. “Bring them out, and I will.” Marilyne ran toward the town, shouting for help. Lights snapped on behind curtains. Doors opened. People saw the tent, heard the children, and saw the clown waiting beneath its striped entrance. Pennywise watched fear move through the crowd. It was small at first. Then it passed from face to face. Art Terrifier slipped inside the tent and pulled the flap shut. The big top had roots now. Its stakes sank deep into the earth. Beneath the carousel, a dark shaft opened into the ground. Pennywise had built his lair. But Marilyne’s cries had also brought the town to its door.

The town did not scatter. It gathered. They came to the striped tent with torches and bats, not screams. Their fury burned bright. Pennywise felt it as heat, not food. He needed their terror, but rage tasted like nothing. The blood moon was coming. A raging mob gave him no meal. Marilyne stood at the front. She had run for help, and help had come armed. She pointed at the tent flap. "There. He took the kids." Beside her, a crowd of five civilians shouted and jabbed their fingers at the big top. Two men stood frozen, mouths open, but even their fear was drowning under the mob's noise. Pennywise smiled anyway. Anger was just a shell over fear. He only had to crack it. He lifted his hand and pulled the tent flap wide. Inside, three children huddled on the carousel floor. The boy in the red shirt held the smaller two close. Their eyes were wide. Their fear was real and bright, the kind he craved. Pennywise let the mob see them. "You want them?" he called. "Come and take them." The crowd surged forward. Then a cluster of red balloons drifted down from the tent's peak. Each one carried a face. The faces belonged to the townspeople. A woman saw her own child's eyes. A man saw his brother's mouth open in a scream. The torches lowered. The shouting broke. One by one, the mob remembered what they feared to lose. Rage cooled into dread. A mother dropped her bat and grabbed her daughter's arm. "We have to go," she whispered. Pennywise drank it in. The fear returned, thick and cold. It poured down the dark shaft beneath the carousel. His light burned brighter. The shell had cracked. But Marilyne did not run. She climbed onto the carousel while the others fled. She reached the three children and pulled the boy to his feet. "Come on. All of you." The balloons popped one after another. Pennywise reached for her. His arm stretched long across the ring. Marilyne shoved the children toward the tent flap. "Run! Don't look back!" They ran. The boy in red dragged the little ones past Pennywise's grasping fingers and out into the night. Pennywise caught only air. He turned to Marilyne. She stood alone in the empty ring, chest heaving, no way past him now. The mob was gone. His bait was gone. But she had walked into his lair to save them. "Brave girl," Pennywise said. His smile stretched wide. "You gave them back to me and kept nothing for yourself." The tent flap fell shut behind her. The dark shaft yawned open at her feet. The town had scattered in fear, and his feeding had begun. But now he had only one guest left, and one guest could not feed a whole town before the blood moon.

The three children reached their homes and did not stay quiet. By morning, the whole town knew Pennywise's tricks. The red balloons showed lies, they said. The faces in them were not real. Fear was his weapon, and a warned town could not be fooled twice. Pennywise felt it from inside his tent. The dread that once poured down his shaft had thinned to nothing. His light dimmed. The blood moon was close, and he was starving. He still had Marilyne. She sat in the empty carousel ring, arms wrapped around her knees. Pennywise circled her slowly. "They're telling everyone," she said. Her voice shook, but she lifted her chin. "You can't scare them anymore. They know." Pennywise smiled wider. He needed a new plan. One frightened girl could not feed him. But the town outside had grown proud. Proud people were careless. He would use their own boldness against them. He reached into the air and pulled down a single red balloon. Inside it floated a face Marilyne knew. "Watch," he whispered. Outside the tent, a blond woman in a police uniform stood at the front of a small crowd. Officer Cassidy Brooks had come to end the clown for good. She held her pistol steady and waved the townspeople back. "Stay behind me," she called. "He's just tricks. I'll drag him out myself." Five civilians clustered behind her, pointing at the tent flap, shouting for her to go in. Two men stood frozen at the edge, mouths open, too scared to move. But the crowd's courage pushed Cassidy forward. She stepped through the flap alone. Inside, the tent was dark and cold. Cassidy swept her gun across the ring. "Marilyne? Where are you?" "Here," Marilyne cried. "Don't come closer. It's a trap." Too late. The flap sealed shut behind Cassidy. The dark shaft yawned open between her and the girls. Pennywise stepped from the shadows, smile stretched ear to ear. He held the red balloon out. The face inside was Cassidy's own mother. Cassidy fired. The bullet passed through him like smoke. Her hands began to shake. The proud officer who marched in to save the town was now alone with him, and no crowd could see her fear. That private terror was sharp and real. It rushed down the shaft, and Pennywise's light flared bright again. "Brave," he purred. "So sure of yourself. They sent you to prove I was nothing. Now they'll wait, and no one will come." Cassidy backed toward Marilyne. The two women stood together in the ring, trapped. Outside, the crowd waited for the officer to walk out victorious. She would not. Pennywise fed on Cassidy's fear all through the night. But her fear alone still wasn't enough. He had turned the town's courage into a weapon. Now he had two guests, and a town that believed its bravest had failed. Their new fear was already spreading outside.
