Chapter 1

Sofía Tepes had fed on a deer at dusk, and now she hunted a way to end all human blood forever. She was Dracula's third wife, queen of the Aztec clan, married to bind the witches to his line. She hated him. Tonight she moved through the library to break his oldest law. The stronghold rose black against the sky, its domes and spires glowing from within. Sofía slipped past the tall doors and climbed to the upper stacks. She wanted one thing: a white-magic rite that could bind a vampire to feed on animals only, never on humans. If such a rite existed, her son would find it here. Dracula's law was plain. Human blood stayed sacred to his line. Any wife who touched a rite like this would be punished. So Sofía searched in the dark, alone, her Aztec crown wrapped in cloth to hide its shine. "You'll ruin your gown crawling like that." She turned. Miguel stood among the shelves, dressed all in white, his pale reddish hair loose down his back. Dracula's son. She had raised him from birth as her own. He fed on animals, like her. He loved the human world his father wanted to feast upon. "Keep your voice down," Sofía said. "If your father learns we searched these shelves, he'll punish me. Not you." Miguel came close. He set a thin book on the reading table. Its cover bore witch runes worn soft by hands. "I already found it," he said. "A rite that binds a vampire to animal blood. Forever. It needs stored moonlight to work." Sofía's chest tightened. For years she had wanted this exact thing. A way to make her kind stop killing people. A way to prove her marriage bought nothing but her cage. She touched the runes. Then she heard boot steps below. Slow. Certain. Guards, or worse, his spy. She thought of the dark-suited woman who served Dracula's every ear, and her hands went cold. "He knows we're here," she whispered. "Or he'll know soon." Miguel did not run. He tore the rite's pages free and folded them into his cape. "Then let him find an empty shelf," he said. "You've hidden long enough, Mother. Hiding won't free you." Sofía looked at her son. She could put the pages back and stay safe in her cage. Or she could carry them out and lose the last bit of Dracula's trust. She pulled the cloth from her crown. The gold caught the glowing glass. "No more hiding," she said. They walked out the tall doors together, the stolen rite against Miguel's chest. Behind them a lamp flared on. A figure stood in the entry, watching them go, and said nothing. By dawn Dracula would know his law was broken. Sofía had chosen the rite over his mercy. Now she needed enough stored moonlight to make it work, before he made her pay.

Chapter 2

By the next dusk, Sofía had the rite spread on a stone table, but the words meant nothing without the hands to shape them. She was the one who fed on animals, who hated her husband, who wanted every vampire freed from the human throat. Yet she was young. She had never worked white magic. She could read the runes aloud, but the rite needed gestures, a slow braid of the fingers to fold stored moonlight into blood. One wrong sign, and the fire would turn inward. It would burn Miguel to ash instead of freeing him. Miguel knelt across from her. He wore his white catsuit, his pale reddish hair loose. He was Dracula's son, born of the witch mother, one of only two vampires ever born and not made. Sofía had raised him from birth. She had named him for her own father. Now she had to be the one to bind him to animal blood forever, and her hands shook. "I can say the words," she said. "I can't make the signs. If I slip, I kill you." "Then don't slip," Miguel said. He gave her the smallest nod. "You taught me the blade. Teach your own hands now." But she couldn't. She lifted her fingers and froze. The runes swam. Her mind was weaker than her body, and she knew it. She had never crossed a mall floor or sat in a human theater, never done any of the small brave things she dreamed of. She could not do this either. The fear grew teeth. Her chest locked. A hot pressure climbed her throat, the old sickness her people called the light of Walachia. Her skin flushed. Her hands split with heat. "Mother," Miguel said, sharp. "Your arms." She looked down. Fire ran under her skin like lava. It poured up her wrists, over her shoulders, until her whole body burned gold and red. The seizure took her. She could not stop it. The moonlight from the stones bent toward the flame in her hands, drawn in. Miguel did not run. He caught her burning wrists and held them steady. "Say the words," he ordered. "Only the words. Let the fire make the signs." Sofía read the rite aloud through gritted teeth. The lava in her hands moved on its own. It traced the braids and turns she could never have shaped by choice. White light met the fire and sank into Miguel's chest. He gasped. The glow ran through him and went still. The fire drained from her body. She dropped to her knees, cold and shaking, human-pale again. A stray dog barked somewhere in the dark yard. A cat crossed the doorway and stopped to watch. Miguel touched his own chest. "It's done," he said quietly. "I'm bound. No human blood. Ever." Sofía had freed her son. But she stared at her spent hands, and the moonlight stones were dark. She had burned all of it. There was none left for the next vampire, and Dracula now knew her law was broken.

The knock came before dawn. Sofía knew the sound of armored fists. She swept the dark ritual stones under a cloth and stood. Miguel rose beside her, his white catsuit still glowing faintly with the new binding in his chest. Two royal guards filled the doorway, spears held ready, red eyes burning behind black helms. Behind them stood a woman in a plain black suit. Sofía's stomach turned. She knew her at once. "Alexis Tomar," Sofía said. Dracula's spy master. The one who found what others hid. Alexis stepped past the guards and lifted the cloth off the table. Her fingers touched the burned-out stones. She did not smile. "You emptied every stone," Alexis said. "You broke his sacred law. He already knows. I only came to confirm it." She looked at Miguel. "And the boy no longer hungers for human throats. That is your work too." Sofía's hands began to heat. The old fire crept up her wrists. She could not fight the guards. She could not fight Alexis. Running would only prove her guilt and leave Miguel to answer for it. So she did the one thing left. She lifted her chin. "Take me to him," she said. They walked her through Castle Dracul to the throne room. Dracula sat on his black stone throne, crimson velvet at his feet, gold spires climbing above his head. Sofía felt small under it. She did not kneel. "You stole my rite," Dracula said. His voice was quiet, which was worse than shouting. "You spent power that took centuries to store. You bound my son against my law. You tested the will of Hecate herself." "I did," Sofía said. "And I would do it again." Miguel stepped forward. "The choice was mine, Father. I asked for the spell. I fed on animals long before she cast it. Punish me, not her." Dracula's red eyes moved between them. Sofía waited for the guards' spears. She waited for the order to burn. It did not come. Dracula leaned back. Something crossed his face that Sofía had never seen. Not rage. Something closer to pride. "You defied a goddess and did not break," he said to Sofía. "Few of my brides would dare it." He turned to his son. "And you, Miguel. Your white magic freed you from the hunger. It was a fool's risk with the stone. But it worked. I forgive it." Sofía breathed. She was not to die today. But Dracula's mouth hardened. "Hear me," he said. "You will free no other vampire while you live under my roof. The stones are dark. You have no power left. And I will be watching your hands, wife." He waved them out. Sofía walked from the throne room alive and unpunished. But Miguel's binding used the last of the moonlight. To free even one more vampire, she now needed a new source of stored power. And Dracula's eyes would follow her everywhere she searched.

Chapter 4

Dracula had forbidden Sofía to free another vampire. But he had not forbidden her to search her own blood. She sat alone in her chamber, the burned-out stones dark on the table. Her hands still remembered the fire of the binding. During Miguel's rite, her power had erupted and swallowed every drop of stored moonlight. That power had a name once. She meant to learn what it was. She went to the one person who would know. She found the Mother in the high hall, her wedding veil trailing down the corridor behind her. The Mother resurrected Dracula. The Mother married him to shield her witches. She was the only witch alive stronger than Sofía, and she watched her son's stepmother with cool blue eyes. "You spent five centuries of moonlight in one night," the Mother said. "No stone gave you that. It came from you." "Then tell me what I am," Sofía said. The Mother lifted Sofía's hand. She turned it over. She pressed one nail into the pale skin. A thread of light rose from the wound, not red, not blue. White. "I saw Maria's blood magic," the Mother said. "Hanako's ice. Miguel's white shards. The blue fire of my Strigoi Vii. The old shamans of the Crown of the South." She closed Sofía's fingers. "Your Aztec witches never had one gift. They wore every gift. You are the shapeshifter of magic itself." Sofía pulled her hand back. "That is not possible." "Your people bred it out of fear. They buried it in ritual. You are the last who carries it whole." The Mother's voice dropped. "You do not need stored moonlight, Sofía. You can become the source." Sofía understood, and it terrified her. To free a vampire she had needed centuries of hoarded light. But if she could take any magic into herself, she could draw the moonlight raw and shape it as her own. No stones. No theft. No permission from Dracula. She tested it that night. She stood at the tall window and reached for the moon. Cold light poured into her open hands. She let it change. It went white like Miguel's. It went blue like the Strigoi Vii. It held. She had not borrowed the power. She had made it. But the Mother had come to the doorway to watch. Her veil pooled on the stone. "He will feel this," the Mother said. "A well that never empties. Dracula fears nothing more than a wife he cannot starve." Sofía closed her hands and killed the light. She had found her new source. It lived in her own blood, and it could not be locked in a vault or spent to nothing. She could free every vampire now, one throat at a time. But the Mother knew. And the Mother served Dracula. The secret was no longer hers alone.
