Whisper Foxyluna laid the third log on the porch rail before moonrise. White petals clung to the bark. She had set out one each night for a week, hoping the wind spirits would smell the bloom and answer. They had whispered every secret to her once. They had told her the child in her care would die, and she had smiled through that last week and said nothing, and the family had stopped speaking to her after the burial. Now she wanted their voices back more than she wanted forgiveness. She stood on the porch of the cabin she had built at the high edge of the woods, where the wind used to comb her fur and lift her onto her toes. The cabin had a green shingled roof and a lantern she kept lit all night. Inside, a kettle ticked on the stove. Outside, nothing moved. For six nights the silence had pressed closer. Tonight it had reached the steps. She could not hear the kettle anymore, and she was standing four feet from the door. A pink-haired fairy darted out from under the eaves and hovered at Whisper's shoulder. The fairy had been living in the rafters since spring. Her wings made no sound. She pointed down the slope, eyes wide, mouth shaping a word Whisper could not hear. Whisper followed the finger. At the tree line, a moonflower had grown overnight to the height of a man. Its petals were pale and streaked with black veins. Dark thorns curled from the stem. The ground around it was bare, the moss eaten back in a perfect ring. Whisper understood then that the silence was not weather. It was a thing that had been planted. She remembered the last words the wind had given her before it went quiet. He is coming. She had never said his name. She still would not. But she knew now that he had already arrived, and that he was growing. She walked down to the flower with her knife. The fairy followed, tugging at her collar, shaking her head. Whisper cut the stem at the base. Black sap ran over her hand. The flower fell, and sound came back in a rush — the kettle's whistle, the creak of pine, her own breath. The fairy laughed once, bright and clear. Then Whisper looked at her palm. The sap had soaked into her skin and would not wipe off. Where it touched, her fingers had gone numb. She flexed them and felt nothing. She had killed the silence at her door. She had also carried it inside her, and somewhere deeper in the woods, she knew, more flowers were already opening.

Whisper wiped her hand on her skirt again. The sap would not come off. Her fingers hung heavy at her side, three of them dead to the touch. She stood over the fallen flower and listened to the woods. The kettle screamed on the stove behind her. Under that noise, she heard something else. Footsteps, slow and even, coming through the trees below the tree line. Not close yet. Close enough. She went back to the cabin at a run. The pink-haired fairy shot ahead and hovered at the doorframe, pointing at the latch. Whisper threw the bolt. She dragged the table against the door. She closed the shutters one by one and dropped the pins. The lantern on the porch still burned outside. She could not go back for it. Through the shutter slats she watched the light on the boards and waited for a shadow to cross it. The fairy tugged her sleeve and flew to the hearth. She landed on a log stacked by the stove, one of the ones Whisper had set out for the wind. White petals still clung to the bark. The fairy pressed both hands to the wood and looked at Whisper hard. Then she pointed up, at the rafters, at a small nest of twigs and dust she had built in the spring. Whisper climbed the ladder. In the nest lay a feather, pale blue and gold, bent at the quill. It gave off a faint light. She had never seen it before. The fairy hovered beside her and mimed blowing across her palm. Whisper understood. The wind spirits were gone, but one of them had left a feather in a fairy's nest before the silence came. A last gift, saved for a night like this. She climbed down. The footsteps outside had reached the yard. She could hear boots on frost. She laid the feather on the petaled log and blew across it, the way the fairy had shown her. The feather lifted. It circled the room once and settled against the door. Where it touched, the wood shone. The shine spread along the frame, up the shutters, across the floorboards. The cabin filled with a soft, steady light that did not flicker. Outside, the footsteps stopped. A voice came through the door. Short and flat, without heat. "Open it." A pause. "You cannot hold this long." Whisper pressed her back to the table and did not answer. She would not say his name. She would not give him her voice. The light on the walls held. The numb fingers on her right hand twitched once, on their own, and she looked down and saw a black thread moving under the skin toward her wrist. She had shut him out for the night. She had not shut him out of her. Somewhere past the yard, past the trees, an old gate stood in the deep woods with mushrooms crowded at its foot. She knew now she would have to reach it before the thread reached her heart.

The light on the walls held, but the black thread under Whisper's skin did not stop. It crawled past her wrist toward her elbow. She counted the beats between her own breaths and knew she could not wait until morning. She had to leave the cabin now, walk into the woods she could not see, and find the gate before the thread found her heart. She did not know the safe path. She had never gone that deep alone. The fairy landed on her shoulder and tugged her collar. Whisper shook her head. "I don't know the way. The mushrooms shift. I'll walk into a sink or a ring and never come out." The fairy flew to the window, pried a shutter slat, and pointed at the yard. The voice outside was gone. The boots had moved off. Whisper did not believe he was far. She wrapped the feather in a cloth and tied it at her belt. She took her knife in her good hand. The fairy squeezed through the shutter first and hovered above the frost, waiting. Whisper unbarred the door and stepped out. The light from the cabin followed her three paces into the yard, then thinned. After that there was only the fairy's small pink glow and the dark between trees. The fairy flew ahead and stopped at something Whisper had not noticed before. A stack of mushroom caps, waist-high, built into a rough cone by the trailhead. The fairy circled it, then darted forward and stopped at a second cone twenty paces on. Whisper understood. Someone had marked a path. She followed from cone to cone, one at a time, the numb hand pressed to her chest. Halfway in, the fairy veered off the line and led her through a bank of pale mushrooms she would have walked straight through. On the other side, a small figure stood in a lit circle of moss. An old gnome, bearded, short, one hand raised. The air around him hummed. He lowered his hand when he saw the fairy. "She brought you here," he said. "Good. He cannot cross my ring, but he is close. The gate is two turns on. Strike it three times. The keeper will answer." Whisper opened her mouth to thank him. He shook his head. "Go. The thread does not wait." He pointed past his shoulder, and she saw the next cone glowing faintly through the trunks. She ran. The fairy stayed at her ear. Behind her, once, she heard a short flat voice call something she refused to hear. She reached the gate. Mushrooms crowded its base. The wood was old and marked with iron. She struck it once with the hilt of her knife. Twice. Three times. The sound carried in a way nothing else had that night. On the far side, something heavy shifted, and began to move toward the gate.
