Chapter 1

Miguel Tepes wanted only one thing his father could never give him: a day in the sun. He was the White Domnitor, son of Dracula, born a vampire and a witch at once. His white magic could turn him into a snow-hare or a pale owl. It could not stop sunlight from burning him to ash. So he stood in the Library of Walachia at midnight, hunting the one rite that could. The rite existed. He knew that much. A white-magic working, powered by stored moonlight, could bind a vampire to safe daylight. But the steps were scattered and half-lost. A single wrong word in the spell, and the sun would sear his skin the moment it touched him. Miguel had already renounced human blood for the humans he loved. He would not die learning how to walk among them. He spread three old scrolls across the stone table. The runes contradicted each other. One promised protection. Another warned of flesh cooking from the inside. He could not tell which fragment was true and which was a trap. A dry voice broke the silence. "You're going to kill yourself with those." Miguel turned. Renfield stood in the doorway, hunched, thin, his black Mohawk stiff above his hollow face. Dracula's cupbearer. Once the noble son Tyler Tomar, now cursed to eat only rats and spiders. Miguel had never treated him like a servant. That was why Renfield came when Miguel called. "Then help me get it right," Miguel said. "I'm not a witch," Renfield said. "But I know who copied those scrolls wrong on purpose." He jerked his chin toward the far stacks. "He's still here. He never leaves." He led Miguel deep into the library. Among glowing glass cases sat Ali Gamal, the vampire inventor, in orange and gold robes. He had spent his life chasing sunlight immunity for vampires. He looked up without surprise. "The son of Dracula," Ali said. "Come for the daylight rite. Everyone does, eventually." "The scrolls fight each other," Miguel said. "I need the true sequence. One mistake burns me." Ali studied him a long moment. "The books are wrong. I salted them myself, so fools would fail." He rose and pulled a plain iron box from behind the glass. "The real rite is not written. It is encoded in an object charged with moonlight. Speak the words in the wrong order and nothing happens. Do it right, and the moonlight does the rest." He opened the box. Inside lay a small carved stone that pulsed faint silver. Ali spoke the sequence aloud, slow, three times, until Miguel repeated it without error. "You have the words now," Ali said. "But this stone holds barely one dawn's worth of power. Enough to test the rite. Not enough to live in the sun." Miguel closed his hand around the stone. He knew the words at last. Now he needed a moonlight reservoir deep enough to burn forever.

Miguel stood on the highest terrace of the library, ready to recite the rite. He had the words. He had repeated Ali's sequence a hundred times. But doubt gnawed at him. One wrong syllable, and the sun would cook him from the inside. He kept hearing a different order in his head. Was it the fourth word or the fifth that came first? He could not be sure. And Ali had said the stone held only one dawn's power. There would be no second try tonight. Renfield watched from the doorway, hunched, arms crossed over his thin chest. He had led Miguel to the inventor. Now he looked ready to stop him. "You don't trust the words," he said. It was not a question. "Then wait. Ask him again." Ali appeared beside Renfield, orange robes bright against the dark stone. The old inventor had spent centuries chasing this exact rite. He did not look pleased. "He is right," Ali said. "You hesitate. Hesitation kills. Come down. We will drill the sequence until dawn." "There is no time," Miguel said. "The stone burns out. If I stop now, I waste it." He would rather risk his own flesh than lose the only power he had. "Miguel." Renfield stepped forward, welts pale on his skin. "I've watched Dracula's people die from bad magic. It's not fast. Don't." Miguel closed his eyes. He chose the order he trusted least, because trusting himself felt like the only path left. He spoke the words. He began to rise. White light poured from his skin, coiling around him in bright ropes. His long hair lifted. His red eyes flared like coals. The light climbed higher, brighter, until it shot up past the glowing domes and towers of the library. A white beacon stood over Walachia, visible for miles. Renfield shielded his eyes. Ali stared, mouth open. Neither had seen power like this from a single vampire. Then the light guttered. The ropes snapped loose. Miguel dropped to the stone, gasping. The stone in his hand was cold and dead, its silver glow gone. His skin was whole. No burn. The rite had simply failed. "Wrong order," Ali whispered. "The stone is empty. That power will not return." Miguel pushed himself up. He was alive. But he had lost his one dawn for nothing. Renfield was not looking at him. He was looking out over the city. Below, lamps flared in windows. Figures gathered on the bridges and cobblestones, faces turned upward. Dracula's court had seen the beacon. Every clan in Walachia had seen it. "They know now," Renfield said. "They know the son of Dracula is working secret magic in the sky." Miguel looked at the crowd forming below. He had wanted a quiet path to the sun. Instead he had lit himself up for the whole kingdom to see. His secret was gone. Now he would have to answer for it.

By dawn, the whole city buzzed. Miguel walked the market row with his head high, but the vampires watched him like carrion. He heard the whispers. Blasphemer. The son who drinks beast blood. The fool who tried to break Hecate's curse and light himself on fire. He had wanted the sun. Instead he had shown every clan his shame. Now his father waited. A summons had come at first dark. Dracula wanted him in the great hall. Miguel entered Castle Dracul with his cape dragging over cold stone. His father sat on the high seat. His mother, the Mother, stood beside him. Her three-mile veil pooled behind her like spilled milk. Her blue eyes gave nothing. His sister leaned against a pillar, all red lace and sharp nails, watching. Maria had never hidden her scorn for his animal-only diet. She did not hide it now. "You lit the sky," Dracula said. His voice was flat and final. "Every clan saw. They call it blasphemy. They say my son wishes to become human." Miguel knelt. There was no lie left to tell. "I do," he said. "I wanted to walk in the sun. Among them. I wanted vampires to become more human. I am sorry I disgraced Walachia. Not sorry I tried." The hall went silent. Maria pushed off the pillar. "You drink from deer and dogs," she said. "You beg the sun to burn you. And you call it kindness." She shook her head. "You are my brother and I do not know you." The Mother lifted one hand. Maria stopped. "He is what we made," the Mother said. She looked at Dracula. "Half witch. He was always going to reach for light." Dracula rose. Miguel braced for wrath. His father crossed the floor and stood over him. Then he set a heavy hand on Miguel's shoulder. "Sofia raised you soft," Dracula said. "She fed you beast blood and filled your head with human things. I blamed her once. I will not now." He pulled Miguel to his feet. "You are my son. I forgive the shame. I forgive Sofia for her hand in it." His red eyes narrowed. "But I will never understand it. A vampire who spurns human blood is a vampire who spurns himself. That I cannot mend." Miguel breathed out. He had feared death. He had gotten mercy instead. But his father's mercy carried a wall. Dracula would forgive him. He would never bless him. "You are free of punishment," Dracula said. "But the clans are not so kind. You have shown them a weakness. They will test it." He turned back to his seat. "Guard your humans, Miguel. The ones you love. You have made them a target." The forgiveness held. But now every clan knew where to strike. Miguel walked out into the fading dark, and thought of his lovers sleeping in the city below.

Miguel walked out of Castle Dracul with his father's warning still cold in his ears. Guard your humans. He needed a spell to hide them, to shield them from the clans. He knew only one place to build such a working. He went to Ali Gamal's workshop, deep in the Hall of Monsters, and brought Renfield with him. Ali did not look up from his desk. Gold pipes and glass vials covered the black stone behind him, all humming with dark blood. He was the vampire who had given Miguel the daylight rite. He had made half the tools every vampire used. "You failed the dawn spell," Ali said. "Now you come back." "Not for the sun," Miguel said. "For my lovers. The clans will hunt them. I want a white spell to hide them from vampire eyes." Renfield hunched by the door. "He means a masking rite," he said. "Ali knows the one." Ali set down a gold tool. "I know it. It draws moonlight to blur a human's scent and trail. But you have no stone left. You burned your reserve on the dawn." "Then I will use my own blood," Miguel said. "My witch blood glows white. I can power it myself." Ali stood. For the first time he looked angry. "You want to strip protection off vampires and give it to humans. Do you hear yourself? Your kind is cursed by Hecate. You would spend your own life to shield beasts we are meant to feed on." "They are not beasts," Miguel said. "To every clan out there, they are." Ali's red eyes narrowed. "I gave you a rite because I honor your father. But this is reckless. A white spell to free humans from us? You will bleed yourself dry and make enemies of all Walachia." Miguel felt the anger, but he did not bend. "Then teach me the words. And let the enemies come." Ali stared at him a long moment. Renfield said nothing. At last Ali turned to a shelf and drew down a thin glass vial. "The words I will give. The blood is yours to spend. Do not blame me for the cost." He spoke the sequence slow. Miguel repeated each word until Ali nodded. Then Miguel cut his own palm above the vial. White light spilled from the wound and filled the glass. His knees buckled. Renfield caught his arm. "Enough," Renfield said. "You've given plenty." Miguel closed his hand. The vial glowed white in his palm. It would mask three of his lovers, no more. But it was done. He had the spell. "You have your shield," Ali said. "You have also made a choice. Word of this will spread. The clans wanted your weakness. Now you have handed them a reason." Miguel looked at the vial. He had protected the ones he loved. He had also declared war.
