The next morning, Bonnie rushed to her practice station, eager to show off her improved technique. She squeezed too much cream from the tube and it splattered across her dress. The white blob spread into the pink fabric. She tried to wipe it away but only smeared it worse. Her paws shook as she dabbed at the stain. The cream wouldn't come out. Bonnie looked at her reflection and felt her confidence crack. She had been so careful during practice, but one mistake in the morning light ruined everything. Maybe she wasn't ready after all. Bonnie walked back to her underground space and sat at her vanity set. Sample bottles and tubes covered the surface in messy rows. She picked up each container and examined it. Some were half-empty from failed attempts. Others still had their caps loose from rushed practice sessions. A poster hung on the wall above the vanity, showing makeup tips next to pictures of common mistakes. Bonnie stared at the mistake column. Her reflection matched those warning images too closely. She needed a break from the basement. Bonnie climbed up and walked into the desert heat. A yellow palo verde tree stood in the open space, its green bark bright against the sand. She sat in its shade and pressed her back against the trunk. The spreading branches blocked the harsh sun. Her stained dress felt tight and uncomfortable. She had moved too fast this morning, skipped steps, rushed through what she knew. Granny had warned her about that. Bonnie pulled out her notebook and flipped through the pages. The steps were all there, written clearly in her careful handwriting. She had learned the basics. She had practiced the techniques. But knowing something and doing it right were different things. Her paws still trembled when she tried to move quickly. One squeeze of a tube and her confidence fell apart. Dottie's house had security traps that would catch bigger mistakes than a ruined dress. Bonnie closed the notebook and watched the desert shimmer in the distance. She would go back to the basics tomorrow. Slow down. Practice each step until her paws stopped shaking. The dream was still real, but the path there was longer than she thought.
