Chapter 3

Bonnie dragged a speaker to the edge of the stage and aimed it toward the broken windows. If the sound could reach outside, people walking by would hear her. They would follow the music straight to the theater. She grabbed the microphone and started singing a mashup of opera and a car commercial. Her voice boomed through the speaker and out into the nameless city. She sang louder, imagining crowds gathering on the street below. This was how stars were discovered. Someone important would hear her and everything would change. She finished the song and waited by the window, listening for footsteps. The street below stayed quiet. Maybe they needed a few more songs to find her. She started again, this time mixing a pop ballad with a soap jingle. Her voice echoed off the buildings across the street, filling the air with sound. After an hour, Bonnie's throat felt dry. She turned off the equipment and left the theater to explore. Two blocks away, she found a small plaza with benches arranged in a circle. In the center stood a stone statue of a woman in an elegant dress. Bonnie moved closer and read the carved name at the base: Marilyn. Cracks ran through the stone, splitting across the woman's face and down her arms. Bonnie traced her fingers along the rough surface. This statue honored someone who made it. Someone who became famous and loved. Her chest swelled with hope. The nameless city remembered its stars. When Bonnie became rich and famous, they would build a statue for her too. People would walk past it every day and say her name. She stepped back and pictured herself in stone, forever frozen in the moment of her greatest triumph. Bonnie ran back to the theater with fresh energy. If the city built statues for stars, then people here cared about performers. They wanted to see shows. She just needed to let them know where to find her. She found an old board in the back room and dragged it outside. Using charcoal from a burned piece of wood, she wrote in big letters: CUTE AS A BUTTON starring BONNIE. She added swirls around the edges to make it look fancy. Then she propped the sign against the front of the building where anyone walking past could see it. The words looked bold and professional. People would read it and know something special was happening inside. They would tell their friends about the talented girl at the old theater. Bonnie stood back and smiled at her work. This was how it started for everyone. You made people curious. You gave them a reason to stop and look. Her name was out there now, waiting for the right person to see it.
