Chapter 1

Bonnie stood on the cracked stage of the old theater, singing to rows of empty seats. Her voice bounced off the peeling walls as she belted out a mashup of opera and a cereal commercial. She wanted to be rich and famous, loved by crowds who would fill every seat and cheer her name. For now, the theater was silent except for her voice. She finished her song with arms spread wide, imagining the applause that would come someday. The dust sparkled in the light from the broken windows above. The next morning, Bonnie walked through the nameless city searching for new places to perform. She turned a corner and spotted an old stage in an overgrown lot. Wooden planks stretched across the ground, weathered and gray. Vines twisted up through the cracks and wrapped around the edges. Bonnie's eyes went wide. This was perfect. She climbed onto the stage and tested the boards with her foot. They creaked but held. She pictured hundreds of people gathered around, watching her sing. They would clap and cheer and tell all their friends. This stage would be her path to fame. She cleared her throat and began to sing a pop song mixed with a pizza jingle. Her voice rang out across the empty lot.

Chapter 2

Bonnie climbed down from the stage in the overgrown lot and brushed dirt from her dress. She needed to practice more if she wanted to be famous. Her voice was good, but something was missing. She walked back toward the old theater, humming as she went. Maybe Mr. Whispers would show up again and listen. Inside the theater, Bonnie noticed something she'd never seen before. Behind the stage, a door hung open. She walked through and found a room filled with dusty equipment. Microphones sat on shelves. Speakers leaned against the walls. Her heart raced. Real performers used equipment like this. But when she pressed a button on one of the speakers, nothing happened. She tried a switch on an amplifier. Still nothing. Then she spotted it in the corner—a rusty old generator with a dented metal shell and a pull cord hanging from its side. Bonnie grabbed the cord and yanked. The generator coughed and sputtered to life. The lights in the room flickered on. The speakers hummed with power. She plugged in a microphone and spoke into it. Her voice boomed through the room, bigger and stronger than she'd ever heard it. She laughed and spun in a circle. This was what she needed. With this equipment, she would sound like the stars she'd heard on old radios in shop windows. She would fill the theater with sound so powerful that people blocks away would stop and listen.

Chapter 3

Bonnie dragged a speaker to the edge of the stage and aimed it toward the broken windows. If the sound could reach outside, people walking by would hear her. They would follow the music straight to the theater. She grabbed the microphone and started singing a mashup of opera and a car commercial. Her voice boomed through the speaker and out into the nameless city. She sang louder, imagining crowds gathering on the street below. This was how stars were discovered. Someone important would hear her and everything would change. She finished the song and waited by the window, listening for footsteps. The street below stayed quiet. Maybe they needed a few more songs to find her. She started again, this time mixing a pop ballad with a soap jingle. Her voice echoed off the buildings across the street, filling the air with sound. After an hour, Bonnie's throat felt dry. She turned off the equipment and left the theater to explore. Two blocks away, she found a small plaza with benches arranged in a circle. In the center stood a stone statue of a woman in an elegant dress. Bonnie moved closer and read the carved name at the base: Marilyn. Cracks ran through the stone, splitting across the woman's face and down her arms. Bonnie traced her fingers along the rough surface. This statue honored someone who made it. Someone who became famous and loved. Her chest swelled with hope. The nameless city remembered its stars. When Bonnie became rich and famous, they would build a statue for her too. People would walk past it every day and say her name. She stepped back and pictured herself in stone, forever frozen in the moment of her greatest triumph. Bonnie ran back to the theater with fresh energy. If the city built statues for stars, then people here cared about performers. They wanted to see shows. She just needed to let them know where to find her. She found an old board in the back room and dragged it outside. Using charcoal from a burned piece of wood, she wrote in big letters: CUTE AS A BUTTON starring BONNIE. She added swirls around the edges to make it look fancy. Then she propped the sign against the front of the building where anyone walking past could see it. The words looked bold and professional. People would read it and know something special was happening inside. They would tell their friends about the talented girl at the old theater. Bonnie stood back and smiled at her work. This was how it started for everyone. You made people curious. You gave them a reason to stop and look. Her name was out there now, waiting for the right person to see it.

Chapter 4

Bonnie stood in front of her sign and waited for someone to pass by. An hour went by with no one. She started to worry that her lettering wasn't bold enough. Maybe the theater was on the wrong street. She picked up the board and carried it three blocks down, where more windows lined the buildings. She set it against a wall and stepped back to check how it looked. The words still seemed clear and inviting. Someone would see it soon and follow the trail back to find her. She just needed to be patient. Stars didn't get discovered in a single afternoon. She walked farther down the street, looking for busier spots to place more signs. At the corner, she spotted an old telephone booth covered in dark-leaved vines. The glass was cracked and the metal frame had turned brown with rust. Small plants with tiny purple flowers grew from the gaps where the booth met the sidewalk. Bonnie pressed her face to the glass and peered inside. The phone still hung from its cord, though the buttons were missing. She pushed open the door and stepped in. The smell of damp earth filled the small space. This booth had been here a long time, forgotten by everyone who used to need it. She traced her finger along the vine leaves. Even forgotten things could be beautiful. The city was full of places like this, waiting for someone to notice them again. Bonnie stepped back out and smiled. She understood now. The nameless city had layers. Some parts were loud and busy, but others grew quiet and wild. The old theater, the cracked statue, this vine-covered booth—they all told stories about people who came before. Her excitement bubbled up. When she became famous, she would bring life back to these forgotten corners. People would fill the streets to see her perform. They would remember what the city used to be. She picked up her sign and carried it back toward the theater, already planning her next show.
