Bonnie walked back toward the edge of town, where the buildings gave way to open desert. Her notebook pressed against her side, heavy with new information. She had learned the basics from Granny and overheard tips at the spa. She had seen the statue of Miss Magnolia and knew what was possible. Now she needed to test herself. A wooden practice station stood near the last building, painted bright blue with a small mirror attached. Bonnie set down her notebook and pulled out the sample cream Granny had given her. She dabbed it on her cheeks in small circles, just like she'd been taught. The movements felt natural now. She smiled at her reflection. Every step brought her closer to understanding Dottie's complete routine. Every practice session made the dream feel real. The desert stretched ahead, wild and bright under the afternoon sun. Desert primroses dotted the sandy ground with soft yellow petals that would open later at dusk. Bonnie walked between them, careful not to crush the delicate flowers. The heat made the air shimmer, but she liked the quiet out here. It gave her space to think about what came next. A strange cactus rose from the sand ahead, its arms twisted upward in spiral shapes. Bonnie stopped and stared at the Dancer's Spiral Cactus. The plant looked frozen in movement, like it had been spinning and suddenly turned to stone. She walked around it slowly, studying the curves. Even the desert had its own kind of beauty—wild and unexpected. Further down the path, an old sundial stood in a clearing, made from weathered stone with faded carvings. Bonnie traced the worn numerals with one finger. This town had history, layers of time pressed into rock and metal. She sat in its shadow and opened her notebook to review her notes. The basics were solid now. She understood cleansing, moisturizing, and the order of steps. Soon she would be ready to watch Dottie's house again—this time knowing exactly what she was looking at. The dream wasn't just possible anymore. It was getting close.
