Chapter 2

The drainage plan could wait one night. Abnerys had won Sebastian's trust with the soil report, but she wanted more than trust in her numbers. She wanted him to want the story behind them. She invited him to her place at the forest edge, a small wooden cottage with a shingled roof and warm yellow windows. If he came only for her face, she would know. If he stayed for her words, she would know that too. Sebastian arrived at dusk. He ducked through the low green door and stopped. His eyes went straight to the wall of framed pictures. Abnerys had painted them herself, one for each ruined vineyard she had brought back to life. Cracked earth. Roots she had saved. A harvest that came after everyone swore the land was dead. "You painted these," he said. He did not look at her. He looked at the paintings. "I paint the ones I fix," she said. "Your land will hang there someday." He moved down the wall slowly. He asked which harvest each one showed. He asked how long each rescue took. He touched the frame of the driest field and said, "This one looked worse than yours." "It was," she said. A blue butterfly slipped in through the open window. Its wings caught the lamplight. It landed on the last empty spot on the wall, where no painting hung yet. Sebastian laughed, quiet and real. "It picked the space for your vineyard." Abnerys watched his face, not the butterfly. He was still looking at the wall. He had not glanced at her dress once since he stepped inside. He was reading her the way he had read the report, line by line. "Ask me anything," she said. "Not about the drainage. About me." He turned then. "Why vineyards? You could fix anything with a mind like yours." The question landed exactly where she needed it. Nobody had ever asked her that. Men asked her to dinner. They asked her to smile. This man asked why. She told him. The first dead field she saved as a girl. The way she learned to read water in the ground. He sat on her floor and listened until the lamp burned low. When he stood to leave, he stopped at the door. "I came tonight thinking I'd study your paintings," he said. "I ended up studying you." She had her proof. He was drawn to her mind. But his words did more than settle her question. His voice had changed. He looked at her now the way she had wanted, and it scared her more than the wall of dismissal ever had. She wanted his respect. She had not planned for this pull under it. The butterfly lifted off the empty spot and flew back into the dark. Abnerys shut the door. She had won the thing she asked for. Now she had to decide what it meant.
