Chapter 17

Dawn broke, and the gods came for Adrean. Not to his temple, but a pull took him. Light wrapped his body and dragged him upward. He landed on cold stone. A vast dome curved above him, filled with stars. A thousand seats climbed the walls, and every seat held a god. Yahweh stood among them, restored and bright. Shiva waited near the bottom steps, snake at his throat. Megalom crouched small beside him, red eyes fixed on the crowd. At the top of the stairs sat a god made of light. White robes, gold trim, a staff crowned with a slow-turning clock. Chronos Luminar, king of the gathered pantheons. He did not shout. He tapped the staff once, and every voice fell silent. "Adrean Alucard," Chronos said. "You drained a god. You broke our oldest law. We gathered to end you." He leaned forward. "Then you gave the power back." Yahweh stepped down one stair. "He pressed his hand to my chest and returned what he took," the old god said. "He asked nothing. I am whole because of it." His words carried across the dome. Gods shifted in their seats. Chronos studied Adrean for a long moment. The clock on his staff ticked. "A thief who returns the theft is a strange thing to judge," he said. "We ruled last night. You will live." Adrean waited for the rest. It did not come. No welcome. No seat offered. The king of gods simply looked past him, as if the matter were closed. Around the dome, a hundred faces watched him with cold amusement. They had spared his life and nothing more. He would breathe, but he would stand outside their circle forever. Megalom climbed the steps to him. "You wanted a clean name," the small god muttered. "You got it. And a locked door." He tilted his head at the thousand seats. "None of these will teach you now. None will bind to you. They let you crawl away alive so you'll never rise higher." Adrean felt the trap close. His arc quest still hung in his sight. Gather five wives. Gather a trillion followers. He could never do it as an outcast the gods watched from above. Charm meant nothing without a path upward. They had judged him harmless. He looked at Chronos. "You spared me to keep me small," Adrean said. His voice filled the dome. "You think mercy is a cage." Chronos smiled and said nothing. Adrean turned to Shiva. "Then I stop asking gods for anything." He would not steal their power. He would not beg their favor. He would build something they could not enter and pull their followers to him one by one, until the seats above emptied. The light took him again and dropped him back at his temple. His court waited. He had lived. Now he would make the gods regret the mercy.
