The sealed stone dropped Adrean far from where he expected. He stood in a forest of gray trees under a dead sky. No prayers touched his skin. No god watched him. He walked, and after an hour the trees thinned. On the horizon rose a city. Its spire caught light from nowhere, sleek metal wrapped in glowing runes, rings of blue and violet turning slow around its middle. Machines hummed across the plain. Magic threaded the air. Lucifer had abandoned this land, but someone had built on it since. Adrean started toward the spire. A hundred miles, maybe more. He did not tire now. Halfway across the open ground, the sky split with heat. A shape dropped from the empty air and landed before him. Wings of golden fire spread wide. Scales flowed white and black, lit with veins of gold that pulsed like a heartbeat. Divine power rolled off the dragon in waves. Adrean felt it in his teeth. This was no beast. It was a god shaped like one. "You crossed the sealed door," the dragon said. Its voice shook the ground. "Only one blood opens that road. You wear it, but you are not him." A man stepped from behind the dragon's foreleg. Black coat, dark wings folded tight, red eyes that Adrean knew. Lucifer. He had warned Adrean about the chamber. He had shown him the doorway. Now he stood in the land he claimed to have left. "You lied," Adrean said. "You said no god walks here." Lucifer smiled without warmth. "I said I left. I did not say I left it empty." He nodded at the dragon. "My guardian. It kills anything that crosses without my leave. I let you through to see what you'd do next." Adrean's stolen powers were gone here. No draining. No system. Only the strength he had built through forty years of Megalom's beatings and three years of training. He did not need the rest. The dragon lunged. Adrean stepped inside its jaws and drove his fist into its throat. Bone cracked. The beast reared, screaming gold fire. Adrean caught a horn, twisted, and rode the head to the ground. He struck again, and the divine light in its veins guttered out. The dragon went still. Lucifer stared at the dead guardian. His smile faded. "I don't want your land as a gift," Adrean said. "I'll take it by holding it. Test me again and I break more than a dragon." Lucifer studied him a long moment. Then he laughed, low and real. "So the thief becomes a builder." He spread his wings. "The city is yours to win. The people inside serve no god. Convince them, and they're yours." He rose into the air. "I'll be watching." Adrean turned back to the glowing spire. His first followers waited inside. He walked toward them alone, and this time nothing stood in his way.
